(Bill W) September 19, 2016 – The Matt Wood Racing #17w team and driver Kerry Madsen posted a pair of top tens with the World of Outlaws last weekend. On Friday night in Spencer, Iowa, the team came back from some adversity, charging from 22nd to ninth in the feature. Another top ten followed Saturday at US36 Raceway near Cameron, Missouri. This weekend, the team will compete at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio with the WoO Friday and the All Stars Saturday.
Things started well at Spencer when Kerry timed in second quick and lined up on the pole of his heat race. That’s when a motor issue sidelined him. “We were leading the heat and headed for the Dash,” he says. “It was just an unfortunate thing. We bounced back in the B and the feature though.”
Lining up outside row eleven in the feature, the St. Mary’s, New South Wales, Australia driver took advantage of a racy track to charge to ninth. “They didn’t get to work the track as much as they wanted to with all the rain,” says Kerry. “But it actually turned into one of the best tracks that we’ve seen up there. It made for multiple groove racing, and it was really good. It was a lot of fun driving up through there.”
On Saturday, the bullring near Cameron, Missouri saw Kerry time in seventh quick and run third in his heat race. He lined up for the feature inside row four and finished tenth. “It was typical Cameron really,” he says. “It was really heavy. It was fast, and it was tough to pass there. We were stuck on the inside of every start and restart it seemed. That wasn’t the place to be. We lost positions on those instead of gaining. I was disappointed in that part of it.”
Kerry was very happy with the car’s performance throughout the weekend. “It had the potential to be an outstanding weekend,” he says. “But we did have the issue on Friday, that we battled back from. And Saturday, we had a fast car all night. It was just the situations we were in. We came out with top tens. I thought it was a real positive that we had a much better car than what the results showed. I feel we definitely had a top five car both nights.”
The 2014 King’s Royal winner at Eldora is looking forward to this weekend. “It will be fun, I think,” says Kerry. “We’re getting everything going now. Every time we hit the racetrack, we are fast…so we’ll see how it goes.”
