The Carpetland Nebraska 360 Sprint Series returned from a 5 week vacation and resumed their 2016 season at I-80 Speedway for the “Speedy” Bill Smith memorial. Founder of Speedway Motors, Bill Smith was a pioneer for dirt track racing. His legacy continues to live on through the dirt track community and this memorial race in his honor.
Twenty-one cars checked into tonights race at the high banked 4/10ths mile facility. Heat 1 saw the #77 of John Klabunde lead the field to the green flag. The lead didn’t last long for Klabunde as the Elwood, Kansas driver of Jay Russell took the lead on the backstretch on lap #2. The real battle was for 4th as Stu Snyder and Jason Martin battled hard for that position throughout the race. As we came to lap #6, Russell had extended to a 10 car lead over Klabunde. Russell retained the lead for the last two laps giving him the win followed by Klauunde, Jordan Boston, Stu Snyder, and Jason Danley. Stu Snyder also recorded the fastest lap in that heat with a lap time of 15.53 seconds.
Ryan Roberts and his Mid-Nebraska Land Developers car #18 was your pole sitter for heat race #2. The battle was for 2nd place as the #1b of Dustin Salvage and #13w of Seth Brahmer battled hard for that position. Racing continued single file for 6 remaining laps with Roberts, Salvage, Brahmer, Cody Ledger, and Don Droud Jr. rounding out the top 5 positions.
The current points leader, Jack Dover, and the #1m of Danny “the dude” Lasoski were your front row starting cars for the final heat of the evening. The initial start was called back as Lasoski jumped too early restarting the field side by side. On the restart, the #53 of Jack Dover propelled his car to lead opening a gap between 2nd place running Lasoski. The field remained spread out and in single file until the finish giving Dover the win. Lasoski, Joey Danley, Tyler Drueke and Darren Orth were your top 5 finishers.
Jay Russell brought the 21 car field to the green flag of the Speedway Motors A Main. John Klabunde rocketed his car to the lead in turn #1. On lap #3, Jack Dover had worked his way up to 5th with Danny Lasoski in tow. With 6 laps down, Klabunde encountered lap traffic with a very fast Jay Russell making his way to the front spot. Fifth place running Dover was working the 35L of Cody Ledger with no prevail as Ledger continued to hold his 4th place position. With 11 laps down leader, Jay Russell, slapped the cushion in turn two and hit the wall rolling his car very hard. Russell was okay but very disappointed as he had a very fast car. He explained that something in the steering had broke to the packed grandstand crowd.
We returned to green flag racing with Seth Brahmer leading the field to a massive lead down the backstretch. Jack Dover moved to 3rd place with Ledger in 2nd. With 15 laps down togo, Brahmer maintained his lead over Ledger with Dover and Lasoski rounding out the top 4. Brahmer of Wisner, Nebraska continued a frontstretch lead but the yellow came as John Klauunde rolled hard in turn 2.
Three laps were left as the racing continued with Brtahmer taking a 10 car lead over Ledger down the backstretch. Jordan Boston made a turn 4 pass over Lasoski with Stu Snyder in tow. Seth Brahmer took the checkers with Ledger, Dover, Boston, and Snyder rounding out the top five.
The Carpetland Nebraska 360 Sprint Series makes its way north to Park Jefferson Speedway, in Jefferson, South Dakoka, co-sanctioning with the Midwest Sprint Touring Series for tonight’s August 27th race.
