(Bill W) August 3, 2016 – Sometimes finishing second can be worse than getting blown out. Such was the case for Josh Schneiderman last week at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway in Iowa with the Sprint Invaders. Though entertaining for the fans, his slide job exhibition with his uncle John Schulz ended up finishing on the wrong end for the West Burlington, Iowa driver. However, Josh and the Deuce Motorsports #49 team bounced back with another solid top ten charge with the NSL at Knoxville Raceway Saturday in their final preparation for Southern Iowa Sprintweek.
Josh had a great start to his night in Dubuque. He won his heat and the Dash. “We showed early in the night that we were extremely fast,” he says. “The track was shaping up to our style. We had a great heat race run and a great Dash run.”
He drew the one for the feature, putting him on the pole. “I knew it wasn’t going to come easy in the feature, because it never does with the Sprint Invaders,” says Josh. “There are quality cars and the guys are always tough there.”
Josh would trade the lead with Schulz several times as they slid each other back and forth on the banked 3/8-mile. In the end, he would settle for second. “I was disappointed looking back,” he says. “I had some issues with the scoring. The guy running second is always going to think that way though. That’s just the way it goes. We had a great racecar. I was happy about that. If I run second, I want John or Jarrod (Schneiderman) to win. The fans were great, and we had a great racetrack. We had a good time.”
After timing in 18th quick Saturday at Knoxville, he won his heat race. “We have a really good racecar at Knoxville,” says Josh. “We had a good car for time trials, but the driver just plain screwed up. We had a great car in the heat race and the feature.”
Josh started outside row six of the feature, but was shuffled back early on. “We had kind of a rough start on Saturday,” he says. “A couple cars got sideways, and we had to get on the binders. That hurt, because we went backwards and had to work our way back up again. We’re excited about how we’re running though.”
That excitement could be seen, when he blasted back to finish ninth without the benefit of a caution. “It just seems the last few weeks since we finished on the podium…we haven’t got the yellows to help us out,” says Josh. “The last three weeks anyway, we’ve needed yellows to bunch the cars up again. We haven’t been able to catch them.”
The team hopes to make the feature at this Sunday’s “Capitani Classic” at Knoxville. “Sunday will be tough,” says Josh. “There are always seventy cars there. Our goal is to put it in the show. I believe if we can get there, we’re going to be fast. Once we get in the feature, we have the confidence to race with anybody.”
Josh will qualify next Wednesday for the Knoxville Nationals. “Your first goal is to qualify well,” he says. “Your second is to make it out of the heat race. Your third goal is to get in the top eight or ten of the A main. You want enough points that you don’t have to race on Friday.”
