Bryan Hulbert - PARK CITY, Kan. (April 4, 2018) Taking on the NCRA sanctioned Park City Cup/Air Capital Shootout this past weekend, Wayne Johnson had a mixed bag of results as the team worked with a new engine and set up at the newly reconfigured 81-Speedway.
"I was looking forward to going there with hearing how they had redone and reshaped the track, and what they did was really nice, but the track surface just wasn't conducive to racing. It is what it is, but for the weekend if I had to give myself a grade, I would be about a B-," commented Wayne of his overall thoughts on the weekend.
Testing an engine on Friday night, the team spent most of their time turning the engine and fuel system. The end result was an eighth-place finish to start the weekend.
"The first night we started tenth and ended up running eighth. Passed two cars on a rubber-down track so you can't ask for much more than that. We got an engine from Danny Wood's car owner and we were testing it out, but we swapped it for one of our regular engines and it made a big difference in the Heat Races on Saturday, but in the feature, it didn't matter."
Earning the third starting spot in the $13,000 to win affair, Johnson held the position until Lap 12 as the brakes began to fade on the Outlaw Wings No. 2c.
"I just settled on running third. The track was locked down so you weren't passing anyone. As the race went on, the car just kept getting tighter and tighter, and I finally missed the rubber because I didn't have any brakes and ended up falling back to seventh."
Looking to the next event for the TwoC Racing team, the rig will head south to the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track for Tony Stewart presents the Vankor Texas Sprint Car Nationals with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by Sawblade.com on Friday, April 6 and Saturday, April 7 at 7:30 P.M. (CT).
In the team's visit one year ago, Johnson was in contention for victory both nights with the weekend ending with a runner-up and third place showing.
"We'd struggled in the past at Texas Motor Speedway so last year we went there with a whole different outlook and completely change the car and stumbled on something that really worked. I just hope the notes work for this year because the car was the best it's ever felt there," commented Wayne who will have additional help on hand this weekend Chick Magnet Motorsports on hand.
"We have Josh with us this weekend, so we've been putting him to work. This is the first time he's ever been to Texas Motor Speedway so he's pretty excited."
