Brian was second in points at Knoxville in 2017 (Chuck Stowe Images)
(Bill W) August 28, 2017 – Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team finished up another strong season at the Knoxville Raceway Saturday. Despite missing a night earlier this year, they still finished second in the final Knoxville Championship Cup Series standings. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver is hoping to race at Lake Ozark Speedway near Eldon, Missouri this Saturday and Sunday. Saturday pays $2,000 to win, Sunday pays $4,000 and there is a $5,000 bonus for winning both.
You started things out well Saturday at Knoxville with quick time.
That was good. The track was obviously lightning fast when you qualify under fifteen seconds. When the track is like that it fits our motor program with Charlie Garrett really well. That was our fifth quick time of the year, and that means a lot to us and to the engine builder.
You’ve really stepped things up in time trials this year.
Our qualifying has been spot on most of the year. We’re going to need to continue that. We have a lot of racing left. We’re heading to Pennsylvania for the majority of September. We’ll need to do our job to keep up with those cars.
The track remained heavy, but you still moved up two spots to finish fourth in the heat.
The way the format ended up being with the big invert (eight) in the feature, we’d have been better off to pull off in the heat. But you don’t know that until it’s drawn, and you’re a racer and you want to pass cars. To get up to fourth was good as fast as the track was. We were excited for the feature.
Starting outside row four at Knoxville in the feature can be tough sledding!
You look around and you don’t see anyone that’s going to be easy to pass. All the cars up there were capable of winning, especially when the track is that fast. We were able to get up to sixth pretty quickly.
You and Terry McCarl had a great race going for much of the feature.
We had a good battle there, which was fun. It seemed like 50 laps, but it was around ten that we battled. Terry’s a really smart racecar driver who is good on any track. It’s tough to pass guys of his caliber, but we were able to sneak by there. We were able to run Josh (Schneiderman) down there and get third. Driving eighth to third the way everything was…it was a good night.
It was a good way to cap off a strong season at Knoxville too.
It was really a good year for our team. I think we won eight heats after starting sixth. We were able to miss a show and still finish second in the points. That was a great accomplishment for us. I’d like to congratulate Ian and the whole KCP Racing team for winning the championship. They did a great job and have been strong all year.
What are your plans this weekend?
Right now, it looks like we’ll run the show at Lake Ozark Speedway. We’ll look and see how the weather looks. I’m looking forward to getting back there. I’ve heard they’ve done a great job getting the track back going, and that’s very important for sprint car racing in Missouri.
