Brad Kuhn (1st car out to time) who won the season opener last week set quick time at 15.334 seconds on a dry track. Scott Hatton (13th car out) was second quick, but lost a cylinder and was done for the night. Danny Stratton (22nd) was third quick, followed by Brandon Waelti (14th), Davey Ray (16th), Mike Hess (11th), Chad DeSelle (17th), Doug Schenck (5th), Harley Slotten (10th) and Aaron Fiscus (2nd). Tim Noble dumped his mount in hot laps (#9) and the Fiscus team brought their backup #8 out for one lap of qualifying.
Heat one (started): 1. Waelti 3 (6) 2. Schenck 19 (5) 3. Kurt Mayhew 14 (1) 4. Buddy Luebke 43 (4) / 5. Doug Jordan 8 (2) 6. David Gough 57K (3)
Mayhew led the ten lapper from its onset to the two to go point, when Waelti grabbed it from him after patiently picking his way through the entire field. Turns one and two had built a sizable ledge despite the dry surface down low. A white flag spin by Gough (who was running fourth) gave Schenck an opportunity to pass Mayhew on the last lap for second.
Heat two (started): 1. Jerry Coons Jr. 5 (2) 2. Nick Lundgreen 41 (5) 3. AJ Fike 69 (1) 4. Brian Ramstack 02 (3) / 5. Stratton 2 (7) 6. DeSelle 6 (6) 7. Bob Shreffler 21 (4)
Coons Jr. suffered ignition problems that hampered him in time trials. They were fixed in this one as he won going away. Fike elected to start at the rear after mechanical difficulties in qualifying, but shot up to third in good fashion. Stratton and DeSelle avoided disaster at the midway point when they got together and got airborne on the frontstretch. They kept it on all fours, but couldn’t gain ground on Ramstack in the final transfer.
Heat three (started): 1. Fiscus 7 (3) 2. Hess 44 (4) 3. Dan Mecum 8 (5) 4. Brian Walters 5 (2) / 5. Tim Noble 8 (6) 6. Jason Dull 56 (1) DNS – Hatton 15
Fiscus slid around row one to lead the first lap and never looked back. Hess was caught behind Mecum for several laps, but eventually put distance between himself and third. Walters added excitement in the final corner by grabbing the final transfer from Noble who had gotten by him earlier.
Heat four (started): 1. Kuhn 43NZ (5) 2. D. Ray 33 (4) 3. Slotten 12 (3) 4. Joe Wipperfurth 4 (2) / 5. Robbie Ray 3R (6) 6. Joel Wyttenbach 38 (7) 7. Rob Keelan 17 (1)
Wipperfurth led the first lap, but got slid by D. Ray and Kuhn, who ended up leading from lap two on out. With Ray on his nerf bar, the pair led a mostly single file affair for the duration.
B main (started): 1. Stratton (1) 2. Gough (4) 3. Keelan (5) 4. R. Ray (9) 5. Dull (6) 6. Noble (10) / 7. Jordan (7) 8. Shreffler (3) 9. DeSelle (2) 10. Wyttenbach (8) DNS – Hatton
Stratton led the 15 lapper with little problem. Wyttenbach flipped hard in turn two on lap five. He was uninjured. DeSelle who was second at the time, discovered problems that sidelined him for the night as well. Stratton led Gough, Dull, Shreffler and Keelan back to green. All remained status quo, until Shreffler went up in smoke coming to turn four of the final lap. He was running third at the time, and the incident handed the final transfer to Noble.
A main (started): 1. Kuhn (10) 2. Stratton (9) 3. Coons Jr. (18) 4. Fiscus (3) 5. Schenck (5) 6. Wipperfurth (11) 7. Gough (13) 8. Keelan (14) 9. Luebke (1) 10. Ramstack (16) 11. R. Ray (21) 12. Mecum (20) 13. Walters (12) 14. Mayhew (17) 15. Hess (6) 16. Dull (15) 17. Waelti (8) 18. Noble (22) 19. Slotten (4) 20. Lundgreen (2) 21. D. Ray (7) 22. Fike (19)
Lundgreen led at the outset of the 50 lapper. Fike exited early, before Davey Ray flipped down the front straight on lap three. He was unhurt. Lundgreen led Luebke, Slotten, Hess and Fiscus back to green flag racing. Hess was quickly into second and hounded Lundgreen for the lead for several laps before turning the trick in lapped traffic on the 17th go-around. Kuhn quickly moved into the runner-up spot and dogged Hess for several laps before a Noble spin on lap 27. Following the pair on the restart were Stratton, Coons (from 18th), Fiscus and Schenck. The six cars were the only ones remaining on the lead lap. Hess was able to hold off Kuhn’s relentless pressure the next five laps, and Waelti came to a stop high in turn one. He was done. Hess pulled away on the lap 32 restart, but two circuits later, he tagged the turn four wall as he was riding the cushion, pitched it sideways and barrel rolled down the front straight ending a nice run. Kuhn inherited the lead and held off two late slidejobs from Stratton in lapped traffic to take his second win in a row at Angell Park.
