Knoxville Raceway
360 Nationals Night Two
61 cars
"Cobra" Chuck Hebing (2nd car out to time) set quick time over the talented field in his first visit to Knoxville at 16.179 seconds. Josh Higday (34th car out) was second quick, followed by Jason Johnson (20th), Wayne Johnson (12th), Shane Stewart (7th), Justin Barger (21st), Skip Jackson (30th), Darren Long (9th), Mike Chadd (19th) and Tayler Malsam (16th). It was important to get out early as the track dried much quicker than on Thursday. Rager Phillips was DQed for losing part of a muffler, and Mallory Armfield was also DQed. Kulhanek was scheduled to time first, but came out last for one lap after breaking a heim in the rear end.
Heat one (started): 1. Dustin Selvage 7 (1) 2. Darren Stewart 91 (3) 3. Jonathan Allard 0 (4) 4. Chad Meyer 7m (2) / 5. Hebing 45 (6) 6. Barger 32 (5) 7. Nick Smith 15s (10) 8. Forrest Sutherland 85s (8) / 9. Matt Linder 1x (7) 10. Tim Allison 11 (9)
Allison was contacted by another car and slammed into the turn two wall, ending his night before a lap could be completed. Selvage led the 8 lap distance going away at the end. Empire State natives Hebing and Barger could not gain ground on the top four transfer spots to the A. 5th-8th went to the B, with everyone else hitting the C.
Heat two (started): 1. Garry Lee Maier 11xx (1) 2. Higday 2x (6) 3. Jackson 1m (5) 4. Ron Blair 35R (4) / 5. TJ Winegardner Jr. 11T (2) 6. Ryan Roberts 18R (10) 7. Ricky Logan 7I (8) 8. Rick Ideus 5 (3) / 9. Josh Fisher 86J (9) 10. Eric Baldaccini B4 (7)
Maier led flag to flag. Higday shot around the cushion early to gain second, while Jackson made similar progress on the low side.
Heat three (started): 1. Gregg Bakker 11x (2) 2. Joe Beaver 53 (1) 3. J. Johnson 41 (6) 4. Brett Mather 54 (4) / 5. Mike Houseman Jr. Y2 (3) 6. Dave Hall 51 (8) 7. Long 7L (5) 8. Nick Mulheim 38m (9) / 9. Kevin Ingle 2 (7) 10. Jordan St. Arnold 7s (10)
Bakker led the duration. J. Johnson was the early mover grabbing the fourth spot from Houseman Jr. on lap one, and shooting under Mather at the halfway point for third.
Heat four (started): 1. W. Johnson 94 (6) 2. JD Johnson 98 (1) 3. Brett Golik 5G (3) 4. Bryan Dobesh 2D (7) / 5. John Hall 7H (9) 6. Chadd 4 (5) 7. Eric Lutz 5L (10) 8. Toby Chapman 84 (8) / 9. Jordan Martens 13 (2) 10. Chris Morgan 7c (4)
Dobesh had to turn on the manual fuel switch before he could get going, relegating his start to the rear. Morgan jumped the right rear of a slower Martens going into turn one when the green flag fell. The result was a hard crash headfirst into the turn one wall. Morgan was uninjured, but done for the night. W. Johnson inherited a front row starting spot after those two cars were eliminated and led wire to wire. Dobesh was able to get around J. Hall on the last lap for the final transfer after coming from the tail.
Heat five (started): 1. Clint Garner 40 (4) 2. S. Stewart 1HD (6) 3. Jan Howard 4x (1) 4. Brad Sweet 35A (8) / 5. Malsam 26 (5) 6. Nate Mosher 22N (10) 7. Mitch Runge 28 (2) 8. Jonathan Cornell 28x (9) / 9. Jesse Giannetto 86x (3) 10. Tim Norman 3G (7)
Garner shot to the low side of turn one, and grazed the front right tire of Giannetto who commenced to flipping. The wreck collected Norman and both drivers were done. Giannetto was taken in for observation. When the green replaced the red, Garner showed his strength in leading the distance. S. Stewart was impressive as well, but couldn't run down the leader.
C main (started): 1. Baldaccini (1) 2. Fisher (3) / 3. Stu Snyder 57 (12) 4. Linder (2) 5. Ben Gregg 22B (8) 6. Dave Glennon 5x (10) 7. Rager Phillips 14P (16) 8. St. Arnold (6) 9. CJ Houseman Y5 (9) 10. Gary Moyer 46 (7) 11. Mallory Armfield 5MA (15) 12. Jason Danley 82 (11) 13. Ryan Yeager 1A (13) 14. Ray Allen Kulhanek 41K (5) 15. Ingle (4) 16. Lauren Densley 00 (14) DNS - Morgan, Giannetto, Martens, Norman, Allison
Baldaccini jumped out early in the 10 lapper, displaying his dominance in this one. Densley and Armfield spun in turn four on lap three, bringing out a caution. Baldaccini led Fisher, Ingle, Kulhanek and Linder back to green flag racing. Two more laps were in the books when Yeager spun. Kulhanek had moved into third by now, but suffered motor problems a few laps later, leaving the lead pair to transfer to the B.
B main (started): 1. Long (3) 2. Barger (2) 3. Hebing (1) 4. Ideus (6) / 5. Logan (9) 6. Fisher (21) 7. Malsam (5) 8. Mosher (20) 9. Chapman (13) 10. Winegardner (8) 11. Sutherland (10) 12. D. Hall (12) 13. Baldaccini (19) 14. Chadd (4) 15. N. Smith (15) 16. Houseman Jr. (7) 17. Mulheim (14) 18. Cornell (16) 19. J. Hall (13) 20. Lutz (17) 21. Roberts (18) DNS - Runge
This one was a bear to get going. On the first try at green, Roberts smacked the backstretch wall and flipped hard. He was unhurt. The next try saw Sutherland get sideways in turn four, collecting D. Hall, Lutz, J. Hall and Houseman Jr., who tipped over. Cornell and N. Smith also got together on the frontstretch. D. Hall and N. Smith were able to restart. Another red was displayed on the next try when Mosher clipped Lutz, sending him careening into the turn three inside guardrail. Meanwhile, Mulheim hit the wall after taking evasive action. Both were done. Hebing took the point early in the 12 lapper, once the green stayed out. On lap four, Baldaccini spun bringing the last slowdown. Hebing led Barger, Long, Chadd and Ideus back to green flag racing. On lap six, Long showed he was the fastest car by taking the lead and pulling away to a half a lap lead at the end. Ideus snagged the final transfer from Chadd, while 16 year old Fisher fell two spots short of an improbable C to A main scramble.
A main (started): 1. S. Stewart (5) 2. J. Johnson (7) 3. Higday (8) 4. Mather (1) 5. D. Stewart (10) 6. Bakker (13) 7. Meyer (12) 8. Jackson (4) 9. Maier (15) 10. Beaver (16) 11. Sweet (20) 12. Howard (18) 13. Long (21) 14. W. Johnson (6) 15. Dobesh (19) 16. Blair (2) 17. Ideus (24) 18. Barger (22) 19. JD Johnson (17) 20. Selvage (14) 21. Allard (3) 22. Hebing (23) 23. Golik (11) DQ - Garner (9, technical inspection, crossed 2nd)
Golik elected to start at the rear of the 20-lapper and exited early. Allard was the early leader, ahead of Mather. On lap six, Hebing retired. Stewart was moving up quickly and by lap eight took the point for good. On lap 12, W. Johnson had moved into third and tried a slidejob on Allard. Contact between the two, sent Allard upside down and angry at W. Johnson, who went to the work area to repair a nose wing and restart at the rear. The restart saw S. Stewart leading a surging Garner, J. Johnson, Mather and Higday. Shortly after the restart, Higday slid in front of Mather to gain fourth. The lead five stayed in that order to the finish. Sweet was the hard charged moving from 20th to 12th.
