(Bill W) March 2, 2016 – Wayne Johnson and the #2c Racing team were back in action with the World of Outlaws last weekend in Texas. The team showed some speed at the Cotton Bowl Speedway near Paige and at the Royal Purple Raceway near Baytown with the World of Outlaws. The ASCS National Series schedule picks up March 11 and 12 at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Oklahoma.
Few tracks are new to Wayne, especially in the South, but Cotton Bowl Speedway was new to everyone on Friday. “That’s a really fun place,” he says. “I’m really looking forward to going back there. It’s really a technical track. It’s really fun. Those are the kinds of tracks I like. You couldn’t just stand on the gas at a place like that, you had to drive it. It reminded me a little bit of the old Tulsa Speedway with the long straights and tight corners. We actually used our Tulsa notes from way back when.”
Wayne would time in 12th quick in the 32-car field and finished third in his heat, advancing to the main event. He would start outside row six and begin moving forward. “I was running there behind Sammy (Swindell) and trying to get in the top ten,” he says. “Little Haud (Sheldon) got a little sideways there on the restart and collected about three of us.”
He would head to the work area. “We had a flat and broke the jacob’s ladder,” says Wayne.
“Slip (Conner Nelson) did an awesome job and got us back out there. He’s really on the ball. We were able to run up to 17th from there.”
After driving east through Houston, the WoO was ready for Royal Purple Raceway on Saturday. Officials struggled with the timing process and heats were lined up by draw. Wayne started and finished third in his heat. He would start the main event eleventh. “The last night in Baytown, our troubles were a little more about the driver than the car to be honest,” says Wayne. “We were still going to be good. The track wasn’t good early on. Our car got up through there o.k.”
Wayne would suffer a DNF in the feature. “I made a little mistake with the setup, and we got lapped early,” he says. “There was no way to advance at that point, so I pulled off.”
The team was encouraged by their speed on the track with the 410. “We were pretty decent all weekend,” says Wayne. The car was fast. We’re looking forward to getting the ASCS season started here on the 11th.”
