They say to just live in the moment, don’t just live for the weekends or summer. When you live a life like mine, it’s hard to not look forward to the next race. Quite frankly, the minute I leave the last race of that weekend, I’m already counting down the days until the next one.
Hi, I’m Lex Mills from Bondurant, Iowa. I am currently finishing my junior year at Bondurant- Farrar High School. As I grew up, racing became a huge part of my life. My brother, Nathan Mills, started racing at the age of seven in an Outlaw Dirt Kart. I had no choice not to like it; as I would spend every Friday evening, from April to September watching him race at English Creek Speedway, just South of Knoxville. My racing career began two years after him, also at the age of seven. If you'd asked my Mom if she thought I would race someday, she would’ve told you absolutely not. Okay, maybe it’s because I was as girly as they come, and being the trophy girl at the races was right up my alley. Then one day my parents finally caved in and bought me my own Outlaw Dirt Kart.
I started my racing career in a restrictor box stock for the first two years, then moved up to a box stock for another two years, before making the jump to a 125cc. I now am racing a Micro Sprint around the Midwest. Racing every Friday night, from April to September at my home track known as English Creek Speedway is where my love for racing all began. Occasionally, I ran special events in Missouri and Wisconsin, which helped me to grow as a racer. Race season was year round for us, as we would race indoors at Sedalia, Missouri, through the winter months.
In 2012, my focus in racing started to take a different direction. Natalie Sather approached me with a job opportunity to work for Cody Darrah, Kyle Larson and Rico Abreu’s merchandise trailer at the Knoxville Nationals. That experience opened a whole new world for me. The next two years, I continued working for her in Kasey Kahne Racing’s merchandise trailer for events around the Midwest. In 2015, a phenomenal opportunity presented itself, allowing me to work for the inaugural National Sprint League in the merchandise department. Just when I thought I had learned a lot, wow I learned even more. I was given a ton of responsibilities and other duties, including running the scoring and timing system. Also in 2015, I started doing public relations work for Brad Comegys’ sprint car team. I designed and updated his website, wrote press releases, handled his social media sites, and a variety of other things.
This year has already brought about a variety of opportunities including; handling the public relations side of Brad’s team, also public relations for my brother’s team, as he is competing as a rookie in a 305 Sprint Car at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, selling shirts here and there for drivers as needed, shadowing Bill Wright at Knoxville Raceway, and working on an event that will be coming to the public soon! There’s no way to thank all the people who have got me to where I am today and continue to help me. But you know who you are, so thank you!
