All Stars Thunder Through the Plains Night #5
33 cars
Terry McCarl (10th car out to time) and Gary Wright (14th car out) tied for the fastest time in qualifying at 11.000 on the 1/3 mile. McCarl was given the nod for quick time, because he qualified earlier. Shane Stewart (27th) was third quick, followed by Tim Shaffer (11th), Clint Garner (19th), David Gravel (26th), Garry Brazier (25th), Tony Bruce Jr. (31st), Tim Kaeding (12th) and Sam Hafertepe Jr. (13th).

The track was heavy for the 8-lap heats, which had an invert of six. All starters outside row one won, and all starters inside row three failed to make a transfer.

Wilson left the field behind. Stewart was the mover. Lambertz made a few overtures for the final transfer, but Peters was too much.
Heat four (started): 1. Gregg Bakker 11x (2) 2. Scott Winters 23w (4) 3. Shaffer 83 (6) 4. Greg Hall 4wa (1) 5. Lynton Jeffrey 12 (3) / 6. Bruce Jr. 18 (5) 7. Cody Hansen c4 (8) 8. Ryan Bickett 17B (7)
C. Hansen brought out the only caution of the heats on lap seven. Bakker led Hall, Winters, Shaffer and Jeffrey back to green. Winters and Shaffer shot by Hall into second and third on the green, white, checker finish.
B main (started): 1. Brazier (3) 2. Bruce Jr. (4) 3. Gravel (2) 4. Rosenboom (5) / 5. Lambertz (7) 6. Jones (6) 7. Wolfgang (11) 8. Garner (1) 9. Hansen (12) 10. Riedel (9) 11. Ballenger (10) 12. Bickett (8) 13. McGillivray (13)
Garner shot out to a big lead in the 12-lapper with Brazier, Gravel and Bruce Jr. in transfer spots. They raced that way, until lap nine, when Hansen spun. When Riedel slowed to miss him, the leader Ganer, got into the back of him. That handed the lead to Brazier, Bruce Jr. worked by Gravel, and Rosenboom assumed the final transfer and held on the last four laps.
A main (started): 1. McCarl (2) 2. Hafertepe Jr. (3) 3. Shaffer (1) 4. Kaeding (6) 5. Bakker (19) 6. Stewart (5) 7. Wimmer (7) 8. T. Meyer (20) 9. Throckmorton (10) 10. Rosenboom (24) 11. Bunton (22) 24. Hall (23)
C. Meyer went to the work area before the green fell, and rejoined the field, starting at the tail. A four car pile-up occurred at the drop of the green against the frontstretch wall. Dobmeier, Wilson, Bunton and Hall were all done. With lightning surrounding the speedway the call was made to shorten the event to 30 laps instead of 40. McCarl shot out to the lead ahead of Shaffer, Wright and Hafertepe Jr. Kaeding had moved into fifh by lap five, when Wright slowed to a stop and retired. Two laps later, Winters stopped on the front straight while running eighth. A lap nine stoppage saw Gravel get upside down on the backstretch. McCarl led Shaffer, Kaeding, Hafertepe Jr. and Stewart back to green. At the halfway point, Hafertepe grabbed third back from Kaeding and tried to reel in the leaders. Peters was up to sixth from 14th, and C. Meyer had come from the tail back to seventh on lap 19, when he flipped in turn four. The final restart of the night saw McCarl leading Shaffer, Hafertepe Jr., Kaeding and Stewart. Bakker was the charger the last eleven laps, roaring into the top five from 19th and earning hard-charger honors. McCarl was slowed the last three laps by lapped traffic. Shaffer ran second and tried to dive low in the final corner, but came up short. Hafertepe Jr. rod the rim by Shaffer in the last corner for second. McCarl earned $10,000 for his win. Eleven cars remained in a race of attrition. Myers came to a stop atop turn four on the last lap, and Peters, who had a great run, fell just short of the start/finish line.
