(Bill W) June 27, 2017 – Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team have a busy week ahead that starts with tonight’s World of Outlaws FVP Outlaw Clay Classic at the Dirt Oval at Route 66 in Joliet, Illinois. The team also plans on running with the WoO at Deer Creek Speedway near Spring Valley, Minnesota Thursday and Knoxville Raceway Saturday. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver finished seventh with the WoO last Friday at West Liberty Raceway in Iowa and ended up on the podium Saturday at Knoxville.
I know you’re excited about tonight’s events in Joliet.
We’re really looking forward to Joliet tonight with FVP being the presenting sponsor. It’s always good when they bring out their customers and employees. We can talk to them and really thank them for their support. We hope we can contend for a win there, and do well Thursday at Deer Creek too. It’s a big week.
Last Friday, you were able to compete at the half-mile in West Liberty with the Outlaws.
We drew a really good number, we just didn’t capitalize on that. We were still able to go out and get eighth quick, which wasn’t horrible. But you want to get in the first row if you can with the Outlaws.
You started inside row two in the heat.
The outside row got going a little better than we did in the heat and we ended up fourth. In the feature, we were able to go from 11th to seventh. It laid rubber there towards the end of the heats. They tried to work it, but it just didn’t work out.
It must have been neat to get to a different venue.
It was a phenomenal crowd. It’s always good to get back in those areas that haven’t seen sprint cars for a while.
At Knoxville Saturday, you started fast again.
We were able to come out and get second quick, which was good. In the heat, we went from sixth to win it. That’s really been our strong suit all year long.
The track changed their tire rule to the use of one all night long instead of being able to change it for the heats. How will that affect your approach the rest of the year?
The driver has to think about what’s going on in the heat race. If the track looks abrasive, maybe the best thing is to pass a couple cars in the heat and ride around. The heat race doesn’t pay and the feature pays $4,000. With that kind of rule change, you have to change your strategy.
The invert for the feature was eight, putting you back in row four.
We knew it was going to be tough with the track conditions. We knew it was going to lay rubber, and we had to get at it pretty quick. We were able to go from seventh to third there. At that point, with the tire rule…ours hadn’t looked good after the heat race. We had to conserve and hold on there to the finish.
