(Bill W) June 6, 2017 – The induction weekend in Knoxville, Iowa for the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame was emotional for Altoona, Iowa’s Terry McCarl. He became only the second Iowa native driver to be inducted, joining Earl Wagner. He also hit the track Saturday night in the 360 class, finishing second. This weekend will see a trio of races, starting Thursday night at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin for a $5,000 to win event with the IRA. Friday and Saturday, the World of Outlaws come to Knoxville.
When he was called to the stage for his induction, TMAC was noticeably emotional. “There were a lot of emotions there, and I don’t know that it was one of my best speeches,” he says. “I told (emcee) Dave Argabright not to go Barbara Walters on me and make me cry. It was unbelievably special. As it got closer, it started sinking in more and more. Getting to hang out with the current Hall of Famers Friday night was crazy.”
Many of the current inductees that were present congratulated him. “For me, I’m a historian and I love the sport so much,” says TMAC. “To have Pancho Carter come up to me, and Lynn Paxton, that’s pretty awesome! I didn’t even know they knew who I was. Those were my heroes when I was young. To have my name in the Hall of Fame is pretty crazy.”
Many of those who made an impact on TMAC’s career were in attendance. “Lori surprised me,” he says. “Keith Offill from Country Builders Construction and Craig “Cowboy” Smith came in from California. John Harper was my mechanic in California back in 1992, and he was there. I used to pay him $100 a week, and my Dad made me give him a raise to $150. Now he’s a big part of Brown and Miller Racing Solutions. He’s traveling to Formula One and Indy car races. He’s got the life. Back then, it was just John and me and a pregnant Lori with Austin.”
Former car owners and partners were also there. “Janet Holbrook came in from Ohio,” says TMAC. “Gary Dean was there. Most of my mechanics that I’ve had were there. Troy Renfro and Glenn Freeland were both there. Having my first car owner, Daryl Arend there was probably biggest for me. Without him giving me a chance, I may never have stepped in a sprint car. Bob and Beulah Elder were both there. They have been big supporters of not only me, but the Hall of Fame.”
Others inducted included drivers Earl Cooper, Dave Darland and Tony Elliott, engine builder John Singer, media personalities Doug Auld and Pat Sullivan, and one of TMAC’s former owners, Guy Forbrook. “To be inducted in this class was tremendous,” he says. “I have so much respect for the other inductees. I remember my buddies and I would sit up in turn one at Knoxville so we’d get mud thrown on us. I remember Eddie Leavitt driving the 4J by and hearing the sound of that John Singer engine he had. I remember us thinking, ‘What is that?’ The stories could go on and on.”
TMAC got to business on the track Saturday night at Knoxville. He timed in second quick and finished fifth in his heat. “That was our third night on our J&J chassis,” he says. “We’re still testing it out, but we’ve had a first, second and third with it already. The best test is to go out a race. We’re feeling out the car, and I’m happy.”
Lining up outside row one, he would chase Wayne Johnson to the checkers, finishing second.
“We went a bit far and we were a little loose coming off the corner,” says TMAC. “We tried something that we had done on our JR1 chassis a few nights before when we won at Quincy. Knoxville’s just a little big for that setup. But we came out with a second. Wayne (Johnson) was just a rocket ship. We don’t mind getting beat when we get beat fair and square. I feel like we learned a lot.”
Powered by a Jaymie Moyle engine supplied by Don Long, it was probably TMAC’s last 360 start at Knoxville before the 360 Nationals. “That was actually Don’s oldest engine, so we feel good about August,” he says. “We should have the fresher one back in plenty of time for that, and we’re really looking forward to it. We’ll really be fast at that point.”
The team will return to Angell Park Speedway Thursday. Their event there a couple of weeks back was postponed by rain after TMAC set quick time in his group. “Austin and I are heading for Sun Prairie,” he says. “It’s a fun track, and the fans are great up there. It will be a good opportunity for us to run the J&J with the 410, and then bring the JR1 out for the Outlaw show Friday and Saturday.”
