Mark started fourth in his heat.  “We were able to sneak into the lead in one and two,” he says.  “We were able to roll the bottom and slide in front of the top two cars.  We got the lead from there and kept on trucking.  The track was pretty decent.  It was dried out, but there was both a cushion and a little bit of a bottom groove.”

He started outside row one in the feature beside Kennedy.  “Thomas has been lightning fast this year, and actually at the end of last year too,” says Mark.  “It was probably the best local race we’ve had at River Cities for a while.  It was a battle.”

Mark would settle into second behind Kennedy early.  “We went at it the first few laps, and then kind of got in line around the top,” he says.  “We were able to keep him within striking distance, and I was hoping the lapped cars would mix it up.”

He would get his wish, but Kennedy navigated well.  “He was making a lot of good decisions and getting through there,” says Mark.  “We turned up the wick at the end, and we were able to catch up to him a little bit.  The track started laying rubber the last five or ten laps there.”
Mark saw the opportunity for one last try.  “We were able to get beside him, but I should have waited another lap or so,” he says.  “He was able to see my nose and he took the line away in the rubber.  We were able to hang on for second.  It was definitely an action-packed race!  The fans definitely enjoyed it!’
