A strong 33-car field signed in at Knoxville, and despite a late pill, Carson timed in well.  “We got our fresh Moyle (Racing Engines) back this week, and it ran great,” he says.  “We went out a little late in qualifying, but we were able to lay down some decent laps and time in eighth quick.”

He started fifth in his heat.  “With the point system at Knoxville, you have to go forward every time you’re on the track,” says Carson.  “We were able to drive up to third and that was good enough to start third in the feature.”

Carson rode the cushion in third behind Matt Covington and Calvin Landis.  “I needed to move down to the bottom in three and four a little earlier,” he says.  “(Ryan) Giles got by me, and I didn’t know what to think.  He’s always on the bottom, and I didn’t know if my car would be as good as his down there.  I felt good on the top.”

He stayed up top until traffic came.  “I didn’t want to go down there and miss it,” says Carson.  “I knew a lot of good cars were behind us like (Clint) Garner and (Cap Henry).  I kept ripping the cushion and we got to traffic.  I was able to catch Covington, and I didn’t have any choice but to go low in three and four.  The car stuck down there beautifully.  I was disappointed that I hadn’t gone down there ten laps previous.”

Carson would emerge third after a good race.  “Covington and I had a good battle,” he says.  “I think we slid each other in one and two three or four times.  We were finally able to make it stick on the white flag lap and we came home third.”

Hindsight is 20/20.  “Looking back, you know it’s easy,” says Carson.  “The top just felt so good.  It was rough, and you had to be aggressive.  I like getting up on the wheel.  We have some good power, so it felt good up there.  The next time we go to Knoxville, I’ll be able to learn from this one.”
