(Bill W) May 20, 2011 – Terry McCarl found Victory Lane for the first time in 2011 on Friday night in Monster Energy™ Sprint Car Series action at the Jacksonville Speedway in Illinois. It was the Altoona, Iowa native's first win since a pair of injuries cost him the majority of the 2010 season. The win was worth $2,600 thanks to bonuses from Advance Glass of Springfield, Illinois ($500) and Layne's Construction ($100).
Jimmy Hurley was going for a sweep after winning his heat race and the Dash. The feature was action packed, but took awhile to get going. With just one lap in the books, Mike Hess spun to bring out the caution. Before another lap could be completed, Jerrod Hull suffered a flat right rear tire after contact with Terry Babb.
The restart saw Hurley leading Brian Brown, Robbie Standridge, McCarl and Jeremy Standridge back to green flag racing. While Hurley took off, the action heated up for second, third and fourth before Joey Moughan suffered a flat left rear tire and retired for the event.
Hurley was using the low side on a rough track that yielded some ruts. McCarl was able to circle around Brown for second on the tenth lap, and Danny Lasoski was able to move into the top five by lap 13, when Ben Wagoner spun.
Robbie Standridge was running fourth when he caught a rut in turn four, turned sideways and came to a stop on lap 14. McCarl sized up Hurley on the restart, and ran him down using a diamond line in turns one and two. "There was moisture that hadn't been used all night on the bottom of turn two," said McCarl. "You couldn't stay down to hit it by running the low line. I was able to enter high and come back low exiting two."
The formula proved to be a winning one, as McCarl took the lead for good on lap 16. One final caution came out, when Jim Moughan Jr.'s nice run up to fifth came to an end when he hit an infield tire. McCarl pulled away under green to record the win. "I have to thank all of our sponsors," he said of the TK Concrete, VerMeer Motorsports #55. "This M.O.W.A. series is a great thing, and we want to support it."
Hurley held on to a popular second. "Normally the track isn't quite this rough," he said. "Usually it builds a berm up top, or it is around the bottom. We had a good run though."
Brown finished in the show position, and was quick to thank the big crowd on hand. "I want to thank these fans for coming out," he said. "This is a great crowd. I think this is the first time we've actually finished a race here. Usually, we go through a Jacob's Ladder by hitting the backstretch wall."
Danny Lasoski finished fourth, while Terry Babb made a last corner pass for fifth. Hard-charger, Chris Urish, Jeremy Standridge, Robbie Standridge (back from the rear), Bret Tripplett and Wagoner rounded out the top ten.
Hurley, Jeremy and Robbie Standridge picked up heat wins, while Hurley also won the dash. Joey Moughan won the B.
Justin Springer took a rough ride when he flipped in the third heat. He was uninjured, as was Tiffany Wyzard who tipped over in the B. It was a rough night for AJ Bruns, who was involved in two separate incidents in his heat, including the Springer accident, and one in the B.
The Monster Energy™ Sprint Car Series is back in action next Friday night, May 27, at the Fayette County Speedway in Brownstown, Illinois.
