(Bill W) April 4, 2017 – Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team got in a trio of events with the World of Outlaws last week. Fortune didn’t smile on the team in events in California in Placerville, Hanford and Perris, but the team is looking forward to running in Arizona with the WoO at Cocopah Speedway near Yuma, and at Arizona Speedway near Queen Creek.
You timed in 11th quick in your group in Placerville Wednesday.
Things didn’t start off the way we’d hoped. When you show up to a new place, it can be a guessing game. We’ve been good at new tracks, but I feel I was on the wrong part of the track qualifying. You can’t do that with the Outlaws.
You moved up from sixth to fourth in your heat, and started 13th in the feature.
In the feature, we were running in the tenth to twelfth range. I got up on the infield berm. When I did that, I came down on Tim Kaeding. That ran my nerf bar into my right rear tire. Eventually, that cut the right rear tire and ended our night. It wasn’t the finish we were looking for, but it was a cool event that Brad (Sweet) put on. It reminded me of a coliseum. Everyone was looking down on the track. It was packed. Any of these Outlaw races you go to anymore have awesome crowds.
At Keller Auto Speedway, you timed in mid-pack.
With the qualifying, you need to make two very good laps, and I didn’t make a good lap in either corner. I didn’t get through the hole in one and two, and we ended up 14th quick.
That put you outside row two for the heat.
We got a really good start and got to third. Then I didn’t get off turn two very well and let a couple back by. I was able to grab the last transfer spot from Jason Sides on the very last lap.
Starting 18th in the feature, you were charging into the top ten before you had some issues.
It got really slick to a big curb. It was really an awesome track. It was technical. We were able to get ourselves in the top ten there. Then I hooked the curb and came across the track. Unfortunately, I got into Bud Kaeding and caused him to turn over. That’s never good. That cut our left rear tire. We changed that, came out, got run over and cut our right rear tire. One tire was our fault, and one wasn’t. It just wasn’t our night.
I know the stop at Perris Auto Speedway was important for you as FVP was again a presenting sponsor.
At Perris, we had a little over one hundred FVP customers and employees at our hospitality tent. That was awesome.
Perris ended up being your best finish of the weekend.
We timed in around 13th. We finished sixth in the heat. In the main, we started 18th and got up to twelfth before it laid rubber. It was really a mediocre weekend for us. We’re anxious to get on to Arizona.
You’ve had some success at these tracks in Arizona.
We haven’t been our best in Yuma. But when you look at the track, it should fit our style. Saturday, we head to Queen Creek, where we set a track record last year and had a good top ten run. These two tracks should be in our wheelhouse. Hopefully, we can knock those two out, and head back to the Midwest.
