Ohio Speedweek Night #3

45 cars

Jordan Harble got upside down on the frontstretch in hot laps. He was o.k. and returned to get a lap of qualifying in. With 40+ cars, each received one lap on the clock. A push truck jumped the left rear tire of Brandon Wimmer's mount, damaging his top wing. He would come out later with a new lid to get a time in.

Brad Sweet (16th car out to time) tied Cap Henry's track record by setting quick time at 10.363 seconds on the banked ¼-mile oval. Danny Holtgraver (17th car out) was second quick, followed by Kyle Larson (35th), Dave Blaney (29th), Travis Philo (2nd), Shane Stewart (22nd), Tim Shaffer (25th), Caleb Griffith (10th), Cap Henry (16th) and Byron Reed (7th).

Heat one (started): 1. Henry 54 (4) 2. Jac Haudenschild 6 (1) 3. Dean Jacobs 97 (3) 4. Caleb Helms 40 (2) 5. Sweet 49 (6) / 6. Gary Taylor 40T (8) 7. Brad Bowman 55 (10) 8. Philo 5T (5) 9. Brady Bacon 99 (11) 10. Kody Kinser 4m (7) 11. Kory Crabtree 60c (9) 12. Jordan Harble 5H (12)

The wind began to blow as rainclouds built on the horizon. This one was tough to get underway. J. Harble exited right away. Philo biked in turn two on the first lap and looked to slip the left rear off the bead. Bacon didn't make the initial call, but joined the field. Another try saw Sweet hit the hay bale off the backstretch and spin. He restarted at the tail. Kinser stopped after biking in turn two on the next try, and Sweet spun to bring another stoppage on the try after that one. Crabtree exited at that point. J. Haudenschild took the lead early in the 10-lapper, while Bacon moved into fifth. Henry took command at the front on lap three. Bacon slowed with an injector line problem. Sweet took advantage to assume the final transfer. He also would have been out in most organizations for causing two cautions, but the All Stars allow three. Score for Sweet.

Heat two (started): 1. Greg Wilson w20 (2) 2. Holtgraver 45 (6) 3. Brandon Wimmer 9w (3) 4. Stewart 3G (5) 5. Danny Smith 4 (7) / 6. Jacob Allen 1a (1) 7. Robin Dawkins 29T (9) 8. Scott Curren 69 (11) 9. Reed 5 (4) 10. Duane Zablocki 9z (8) 11. Brandon Spithaler 22 (10)

Reed tangled with another car on the start and spun, collecting Zablocki and Spithaler. All three were done. Wilson led the distance, with Holtgraver making good ground. Stewart came just short of third at the checkers.

Heat three (started): 1. Larson 1K (6) 2. Cole Duncan 7K (2) 3. Shaffer 83 (5) 4. DJ Foos 53 (4) 5. Justin Henderson 0 (7) / 6. Stuart Williams 46 (8) 7. Trey Gustin 80 (1) 8. Logan Schuchart 1s (10) 9. Stuart Brubaker 35 (3) 10. Rob Chaney 9x (9) DNS – Bruce White 96au

Gustin was penalized a row for jumping the initial start. Gustin got a little sideways heading into turn one on the next try, bottling Henderson, who was rear-ended by Chaney, who suffered enough damage to be done for the night. Duncan grabbed the early lead. Brubaker was running second on the second lap when he got high off the backstretch and drove off the track into the pits. Schuchart flipped hard into the turn three fence, taking out the caution light. He was o.k. Brubaker elected not to restart at the tail when given the option. Duncan continued to lead on the restart. Williams came to a stop with five laps in. Larson shot into the lead on the restart and went on to win.

Heat four (started): 1. Ryan Broughton 22B (1) 2. Dallas Hewitt 2m (2) 3. Sheldon Haudenschild 33m (3) 4. Dale Blaney 2 (6) 5. Griffith 40DD (5) / 6. Bryan Sebetto 24H (4) 7. Adam Wilt 15 (8) 8. Dave Blaney 10 (7) 9. Mitch Harble 15H (9) 10. Rodney Hurst 97x (11) 11. Jimmy Pooler 787 (10)

The wind continues to howl and get cooler. Folks are heading downstairs. Hewitt takes the early lead, but gets over the top of turn two on lap three and Broughton takes over. A lap later, Pooler tips over with Hurst also involved. No one is hurt. The race goes green for one more lap before the rain comes. After a delay of over an hour, Broughton restarts up front and wins it.

Dash (started): 1. Sweet (1) 2. Stewart (4) 3. Holtgraver (2) 4. Dale Blaney (3) 5. Larson (5) 6. Shaffer (6)

Sweet led the six lap distance. Stewart took second from Holtgraver on lap three. Blaney went by Larson on the last lap for fourth.

B main (started): 1. Philo (1) 2. Reed (2) 3. Sebetto (3) 4. Dave Blaney (6) / 5. Gustin (4) 6. Kinser (7) 7. Bacon (15) 8. Zablocki (8) 9. Allen (5) 10. Spithaler (14) 11. Wilt (10) 12. Williams (11) 13. Bowman (13) 14. M. Harble (12) 15. Hurst (16) 16. Taylor (9) DNS – Brubaker, Crabtree, Dawkins, Chaney, Schuchart, Pooler, Curren, White, J. Harble

The 12-lap B went non-stop. Not much action up front as Philo led flag to flag, but it was fun to watch Bacon pick his way forward from 15th to 7th.

A main (started): 1. Sweet (1) 2. Larson (5) 3. Stewart (2) 4. Holtgraver (3) 5. Reed (12) 6. Shaffer (6) 7. Griffith (7) 8. Wimmer (14) 9. S. Haudenschild (15) 10. Henry (8) 11. Wilson (17) 12. Philo (11) 24. Dale Blaney (4)

Dale Blaney flipped into the turn three fence, barely missing going over it before a lap could be completed. He was not hurt. Philo was not able to fire after the red and was done. Sweet charged out early in the 40-lapper. On lap five, Stewart, who was running second, went over the top of turn two and Larson pounced into the runner-up position. Sweet's pace was fast and furious, with Larson trying to keep contact. Henry and J. Haudenschild spun into the infield with ten laps down. The restart saw Sweet ahead of Larson, Holtgraver, Stewart and Shaffer. The next 18 laps went non-stop, with Sweet lapping up to eighth place. With 28 down, Henderson stopped with a blown right rear. Fifth running Shaffer did a 360 spin with three laps to go, bringing out the final caution. With two lapped cars in between Sweet and Larson, the race was over. Stewart shot by Holtgraver to complete the podium. Six cars finished on the lead lap.
