Greg Hodnett Cup

31 cars

Anthony Macri (7th car out to time) laid down quick time on the 3/8-mile oval at 12.025 seconds.  Danny Dietrich (5th car out) was second quick, followed by Christopher Bell (2nd), Brent Marks (4th), Rico Abreu (17th), Justin Peck (15th), Tanner Thorson (22nd), Kyle Larson (12th), Ryan Smith (8th) and Kyle Moody (1st).

Heat one (started): 1. Abreu 24 (1) 2. Macri 39m (4) 3. R. Smith 6 (2) 4. Tyler Ross 5 (5) 5. Ryan Taylor 20 (7) / 6. Zach Hampton 35H (3) 7. Dave Brown 44B (8) 8. Jeff Halligan 45 (6)

10-lap heats took the winner to the feature redraw, as well as the quick qualifier (who started fourth), if they finished in the top five.  The top five moved on to the A.  Abreu led the distance from the pole.  Halligan backed his car into the turn one wall and exited a lap in.  Heats were mostly single-file around the top.  Hampton did close late on Taylor for the final transfer, but came up short.

Heat two (started): 1. Peck 13 (1) 2. Austin Bishop 11A (3) 3. Moody 99m (2) 4. Dietrich 48 (4) 5. Devon Borden 27 (5) / 6. Chad Trout 1x (6) 7. Tyler Reeser 35 (7) 8. Jordan Givler 90 (8)

Not much movement here after lap one.

Heat three (started): 1. Thorson 19T (1) 2. Bell 39B (4) 3. Freddie Rahmer 51 (2) 4. TJ Stutts 11 (3) 5. Dylan Norris 44 (5) / 6. Devin Adams 99A (7) 7. Eddie Lumbar 36A (6) DNS – Chase Dietz 39

Things in the top five stayed status quo, until Bell passed Rahmer for second coming for the white flag.

Heat four (started): 1. Larson 57 (1) 2. Lucas Wolfe 5w (3) 3. Skylar Gee 99 (2) 4. Brandon Rahmer 5E (5) 5. Marks 19 (4) / 6. Mark Smith M1 (6) 7. Jon Stewart 13s (7)

The most racy heat saw Larson run away and hide.  Wolfe was all alone in second, ahead of Gee.  B. Rahmer was very impressive on the low side when everyone else was on the cushion.  He nabbed fourth from M. Smith on lap three.  Marks would follow him a lap later with a slider for the final transfer spot.  Marks hung with B. Rahmer, but could not best him.

B main (started): 1. Halligan (2) 2. Hampton (1) 3. Trout (3) 4. M. Smith (5) / 5. Brown (6) 6. Reeser (7) 7. Givler (10) 8. Adams (4) 9. Lumbar (8) 10. Stewart (9) DNS – Dietz

The 12-lapper saw Halligan lead wire to wire over Hampton.  Trout passed Adams for third on lap three, but that was negated by a Stewart stoppage.  Trout repeated the pass of Adams on the restart and M. Smith followed him into the final transfer on lap four.  Brown moved up well to fifth, but never seriously challenged for a transfer spot.

A main (started): 1. Abreu (1) 2. Macri (2) 3. Marks (4) 4. Dietrich (6) 5. Bell (3) 6. Thorson (7) 7. Peck (8) 8. R. Smith (11) 9. Wolfe (10) 10. F. Rahmer (13) 11. Moody (12) 12. Bishop (9) 13. Ross (15) 14. B. Rahmer (17) 15. Stutts (16) 16. Gee (14) 17. Halligan (21) 18. Taylor (18) 19. M. Smith (24) 20. Norris (20) 21. Trout (23) 22. Borden (19) 23. Hampton (22) 24. Larson (5)

The 35-lapper saw Abreu leading Bell, Marks, Macri and Larson early.  Larson quickly took fourth from Macri, as the track dried out considerably.  On lap seven, Marks wrestled second from Bell before Norris spun bringing the first caution.  On the restart, Dietrich passed Larson to move into the top five.  On lap 14, Larson lost his left rear wheel and flipped in turn three.  He was uninjured.  The restart saw Abreu leading Marks, Bell, Macri and Dietrich back to green  On lap seventeen, Macri passed Bell for third, in a great battle back and forth for position.  Five laps later, Dietrich passed Bell for fourth.  Marks gained on Abreu and got beside him for the lead in turn three on lap 23 when Hampton spun bringing caution.  Macri made a move up high on the restart to gain second from Marks, but from there on, it was a race around the bottom in the rubber.  Abreu caught lapped traffic late, but no one wanted to leave the low groove.  He collected $10,000 for his efforts and will have his name etched on the Greg Hodnett Cup which is displayed at the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing in York Springs.
