PA Speedweek Night #3
42 cars
The cars were split into two qualifying groups, with group one making up heats one and two, and group in his first night at Speedweek on the 1/3-mile at 13.823 seconds. Christopher Bell (11th car out) was second quick, followed by Austin Bishop (4th), Jeff Halligan (10th) and Zach Hampton (5th). The second group was topped by Kyle Larson (16th car out in that group) at 13.860 seconds, Justin Peck (2nd car out), Troy Wagaman (17th), Anthony Macri (15th), and Lucas Wolfe (14th).
Heat one (started): 1. Bishop 11A (1) 2. Chad Trout 1x (3) 3. Hampton 35H (2) 4. Brent Marks 19 (9) 5. Tanner Thorson 19T (7) / 6. Niki Young 11P (5) 7. Chase Dietz 39 (6) 8. Robbie Kendall 55K (8) 9. Gee 99 (4) 10. Glenndon Forsythe 5F (10) 11. Chris Arnold 23A (11)
8-lap heats took the heat winner and top qualifier, who started fourth, if they made the top five to the feature redraw. The top five transferred to the feature. This one had plenty of shakers. Bishop led Trout and Hampton the distance. Marks made up for a poor qualifying effort by jumping up from his fifth row starting spot to fourth by lap two. At the halfway point, Thorson had wrestled the final transfer from both Young and Dietz in good racing. Gee fell back and missed out on the redraw.
Heat two (started): 1. Halligan 45 (1) 2. TJ Stutts 11 (2) 3. Bell 39B (4) 4. Billy Dietrich 8 (3) 5. Brandon Rahmer 5E (5) / 6. Ryan Smith 6 (9) 7. Devon Borden 27 (8) 8. Kyle Moody 99m (7) 9. Trey Hivner 7 (6) 10. Eddie Lumbar 36A (10)
This was a mostly single file affair in the top five spots. One caution came out for a stopped Borden with two to go. 63 year old Eddie Lumbar is a good story from Australia. He’s fulfilling a dream of racing in the states. Look for upcoming trips to 34 Raceway and Knoxville on July 8 and 9.
Heat three (started): 1. Tr. Wagaman 19w (1) 2. Larson 57 (4) 3. Danny Dietrich 48 (6) 4. Wolfe 5w (2) 5. Tim Glatfelter 69 (3) / 6. Jordan Givler 90 (5) 7. Tyler Ross 75 (7) 8. Jim Siegel 59 (10) 9. Tim Wagaman 4R (8) 10. Michael Millard 23 (9) 11. Tyler Reeser 35 (11)
Tr. Wagaman led wire to wire. Wolfe was second early, but Larson gut under him on lap three for second. D. Dietrich followed Larson’s lead, this time on the high side, to take third from Wolfe. The locals were cheering Tr. Wagaman, who towed in on an open trailer, and held off Larson for the win.
Heat four (started): 1. Macri 39m (1) 2. Peck 13 (4) 3. Matt Campbell 19R (3) 4. Dylan Norris 44 (5) 5. Gerard McIntyre Jr. 16 (7) / 6. Freddie Rahmer 8R (6) 7. Paul McMahan 21 (9) 8. John Walp 5J (10) 9. Riley Emig 33 (8) 10. Alan Krimes 87 (2)
Macri led Campbell, Krimes, Peck and Norris early. Krimes used the low side to pick off Campbell for second on lap two. A lap later, contact between the two sent Krimes spinning and he was done. Macri led Campbell, Peck, Norris and McIntyre back to green. Peck was able to nab second from Campbell, while F. Rahmer fell one spot short of a transfer, and flipped after the checkers. He was ok, and would return for the B.
B main (started): 1. Krimes (2) 2. Gee (1) 3. Smith (5) 4. Dietz (7) / 5. Young (3) 6. F. Rahmer (6) 7. Ross (8) 8. Borden (9) 9. Kendall (11) 10. Givler (4) 11. Moody (13) 12. Siegel (12) 13. Hivner (16) 14. McMahan (10) 15. Millard (19) 16. Emig (17) 17. Forsythe (18) 18. Walp (14) 19. Arnold (21) 20. Ti. Wagaman (15) 21. Lumbar (20) 22. Reeser (22)
The 12-lap B took the top four to the A. Gee led Krimes, Young and Smith early. Smith worked by Young for third, while Dietz moved up to fifth by lap two. On lap four, Dietz took the high side around Young for fourth before Arnold spun to bring caution five laps in. Gee led Krimes, Smith, Dietz and Young back to green. Dietz quickly nailed down third, but in a great battle, Smith reclaimed it on lap eight. Up front, Krimes never went away and coming for the white flag, passed Gee to take the win.
A main (started): 1. Marks (13) 2. Larson (1) 3. Macri (3) 4. Tr. Wagaman (2) 5. Peck (4) 6. Halligan (6) 7. Thorson (17) 8. Bell (7) 9. Glatfelter (18) 10. D. Dietrich (11) 11. Bishop (5) 12. Krimes (21) 13. Wolfe (14) 14. McIntyre Jr. (20) 15. Stutts (9) 16. Smith (23) 17. B. Rahmer (19) 18. Hampton (10) 19. Norris (16) 20. Dietz (24) 21. Campbell (12) 22. Gee (22) 23. Trout (8) 24. B. Dietrich (15)
The 30-lapper had trouble getting started. Another car contacted Norris, who spun, and collected B. Dietrich, who got upside down, and McIntyre. D. Dietrich tumbled on the other end of the track, and despite work area work, did not make it back out for green. He was able to make those repairs, and restart again, when contact from another car sent Trout upside down on the fronstretch on the restart. No one was injured. Once the race went green, Larson led Macri, Tr. Wagaman, Peck and Halligan. Tr. Wagaman moved back into second. By lap four, Marks had climbed from 13th to fifth. He passed Peck on the low side for fourth on lap five and then did the same to Macri for third on lap seven. Marks had found a low line that not all the leaders had. He passed Tr. Wagaman for second on lap nine, while Macri moved into third on lap eleven. Larson hit lapped traffic on lap 12, and Marks slowly reeled him in. Marks briefly passed the leader on lap 18, and then crossed him up by hitting the high side of turn four to lead lap 19. Peck and Tr. Wagaman battled back and forth for fourth. Larson was hustling in traffic and got into the back of the lapper Norris with nine laps to go. Norris spun and restarted at the rear. The clean air was all Marks needed to pull away for his $7,000 win. He was also the hard-charger.
