Things started well for Mark on Friday with a heat win.  “It was their track championship night,” he says.  “They line you up by your points.  Obviously, I’ve missed some shows up there, so we started sixth in the first heat race.  I was able to get the lead about three or four laps into it.  We were able to win it, and that put us on the pole of the feature.”

He would go on to win his 112th career feature at River Cities.  “To be honest, I really don’t like starting on the pole,” says Mark.  “I like to start a couple of rows back.  That gives you a chance to search the track.  We were able to get the lead right away though, and we led green to checker.”

The bullring was in fine shape as well.  “We’ve been doing some adjusting on the car there the last few times we’ve been there,” says Mark.  “We had a real great car for the feature.  The track was spectacular.  There was a cushion on the top, but the bottom of three and four had enough moisture to make a two-groove racetrack.  There was some moisture coming out of the two in the middle.  If you were on the bottom, you had something there to get you out of the turn.”

The trip to Knoxville with the NSL went well.  Mark timed in seventh quick to start the night.  “We finally qualified in the top eight there,” he says.  “We were happy with that after coming out late.  Our qualifying hasn’t been good there this year at all.  We found a little something at the Nationals.”

After starting fourth in his heat and running a strong second, he would line up outside row one for the feature.  “We started next to (Justin) Henderson,” says Mark.  “He has the bottom figured out there.  I think everyone knew I was going to the top and Justin was going to be on the bottom.  We had a pretty good race for a few laps, but we didn’t have enough speed to get around him.”

Mark would settle for third at the checkers.  “I tried the bottom a couple times and I wasn’t good down there in dirty air,” he says.  “I pretty much committed to the top for the race.  I had one restart where I pulled next to him, but he had the better car there.  I felt we had a solid second place car, but I had a couple bobbles in lapped traffic.  Brian Brown snuck by us for second.”
