Although the heat index cleared 100 Saturday night, a good-sized crowd showed up to brave the temperatures at Eagle Raceway as Modern Real Estate and Empire Fencing and Netting presented Fan With A Can night. Double features were run since the previous week’s were interrupted by rain.
First were the make-up features.
The Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver sprint A’s first circuit saw Nate Weiler in the 4W out front followed by Jay Russell’s 76, the 100 of Clint Benson and Ryan King in the 93. Lap 11 saw Russell grab the lead. 2 laps later Joey Danley put the 14 into fourth making the top 4 Russell, Weiler, Benson and Danley.
I said it was rather a penthouse to the outhouse moment, winning this race and crashing out in the second feature on the second lap. Jay said “Hero to zero real quick! The track in the first feature was kind of narrow and it took me a little bit to get by Nate. Once I did though, I tried to set a pretty good pace. The track was about all that you could ask for, starting that early in the lineup. For as many cars as there were here, I thought the track was really good considering”. Jay’s sponsors include Klein Motors and RV, Fatcat Motorsports, Goodwin Tax Preparation, Ken Smith Auto Body, Deluxe Truck Stop, T&T Motorsports and Chuck’s Hair Center.
After preliminary heats and features it was time for this week’s features.
Jay Russell’s luck after winning the make-up feature earlier turned bad when his right rear caught the cushion in turn 3 on lap 1 of the Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car A Feature. He was not severely hurt, but his car was too badly damaged to continue. When a lap was officially in the books Mark Pace led in the 57 with 5A of Andrew Jackson, Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35 and Doug Lovegrove’s 55 in hot pursuit. Lovegrove leapt all the way up to second on lap 2 but lost the spot back to Grossenbacher the next circuit with Dan Nekolite moving to fourth in the 22D. Grossenbacher moved to the lead the next lap. Lovegrove regained second the next lap. Joey Danley made hard contact with the turn 3 wall on lap 7, causing the red lights to be lit in the corners. Clint Benson put the 100 into fourth on the restart before moving up to third on lap 13. Tyler Drueke took over fourth in the 12 with 7 to go and moved to third with 5 laps left. The final top 4 were Grossenbacher, Lovegrove, Drueke and Pace.
“My 2 DNF’s in the last 2 features sort of helped my starting position. It was nice starting in the third row instead of the sixth. I knew I had to get out early and go. I didn’t know where I was at or how close they were behind me, so I just kept on going. I got kind of caught behind a lapped car running the top and I didn’t have any brakes because we lost the left front rotor in the first feature. We had to change the whole front end and I knew I really didn’t have brakes, so it was kind of nerve-wracking running the cushion, so I had to be careful. Once I got behind that lapped car that was running my line, I sort of backed off a little. I had a perfect car, and it couldn’t have been any better, except for having some brakes”. Trevor’s sponsors include Rick Forbes Motorsports Stop ‘N Shop, True North Construction, Skytop Towers, WC’s South and Restore A Muscle Car and Jet Racing.
