(Bill W) September 9, 2015 – Wayne Johnson racked up his fourth win of the season Sunday night at the Randolph County Raceway near Moberly, Missouri. The win on the high banks netted him $4,000. Wayne and the #77x team head south Saturday night for an ASCS date at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track in Fort Worth.
Wayne competed with the ASCS-Warrior region Friday night at the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Missouri. A charge in the heat put him in the redraw. “We didn’t draw too well all weekend,” he says. “We drew 46 and 42 out of 50 for the two nights we ran a heat. We were pretty good. We were able to run up to second.”
He would draw the six and start the feature outside row three. “All in all, it was a one-lane track that was slick,” says Wayne. “I was able to make the top of three and four work. I was able to get by John Schulz that way off of four, and I think Derek Hagar too.”
Jonathan Cornell was out front with Wayne riding second. “They had a caution late in the race,” he says. “I thought I may have something for him, but I really didn’t. We’ve had some overheating problems with the motors lately. Cornell just had the best car there that night.”
Wayne started in the back of his heat at Moberly’s prelim on Saturday as well. “We were able to get up to second,” he says. “Cornell slid me and I slid him back. I thought you know what, third is plenty good to be in the redraw. We took third. The car was pretty loose, but we were able to get in the redraw.”
Drawing a three, Wayne would spend most of the main event in the runner-up position. “We were able to get to second and ran there quite a while,” he says. “Coming to the checkers, I was hung up by a lapped car and Hagar got me coming off of four. We ended up third, and locked ourselves into Saturday.”
Drawing the pole for Sunday’s finale, Wayne would have to win an early duel with Johnny Herrera. “Johnny got the first jump,” he says. “We went back and forth on the restarts, and got into a slidejob deal. Finally, I slid him and got by him. About two laps after that, it started laying rubber and it was pretty much over after that. I knew it was going to lay rubber, but I didn’t know that it would be that soon.”
The team was happy with the win. “It was good to get a win like that down there,” says Wayne. “We had a solid weekend really. We’ll take that momentum and head to Fort Worth.”
