KNOXVILLE, Iowa (August 13, 2020) – Kyle Larson’s magical season continued Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway. The Elk Grove, California driver bagged another $10,000 by winning Night #1 of the “One and Only” featuring the NOS Energy Drink World of Outlaws. The win culminated a wild night of racing that saw drivers giving all they had to garner points towards Saturday night’s $50,000 to win Brownell’s Capitani Classic presented by Great Southern Bank. It was Kyle's fourth straight win this year at Knoxville.
Logan Schuchart led from his pole position early on ahead of Aaron Reutzel and Cory Eliason. David Gravel was fourth, and Brian Brown entered the top five on lap two. Gravel passed Eliason for third two laps later. The first caution flew when Terry McCarl billowed smoke on the fourth lap. After an inspection, he rejoined the field, keeping his spot.
On the restart, Daryn Pittman surged from eighth to third, only to spin in turn four. Another double-file restart saw disaster, as Eliason, took an abrupt left hard turn driving down the straightaway. That collected Donny Schatz, Brad Sweet and James McFadden. Only Schatz would continue, however he would pull in shortly after the green fell again.
With things shaken up, Brown used the cushion to ride into second, while Kyle Larson shot up to fifth. On the sixth lap, Larson shot from fifth to third, passing both Gravel and Reutzel. Schuchart entered lapped traffic on the 14th lap, while Larson pulled a slider to take second from Brown on lap 15. Reutzel followed him into third on lap 17.
On the 18th circuit, Larson clipped Schuchart’s wings (literally) with a tight slide job in turn four that left the Pennsylvanian’s nose wing askew. Reutzel and Brown were at loggerheads battling for the third spot with five to go. Meanwhile, Carson Macedo, who had started 24th, entered the top five with three to go, surging by both Gravel and Brown into the fourth position.
While Larson checked out into his own zip code, and Schuchart and Reutzel had the podium nailed down, Gravel and Macedo traded fourth the last two laps before Macedo secured it on the final circuit.
Larson would win by 4.8 seconds over Schuchart, Reutzel, Macedo and Gravel. Brown, Spencer Bayston, Gio Scelzi, Joey Saldana and Ian Madsen rounded out the top ten. Jacob Allen set quick time over the 67-car field, while Tyler Courtney, Kraig Kinser, Terry McCarl, Brooke Tatnell, Ian Madsen and Jason Sides won heat races. Anthony Macri won the D main, Sammy Swindell claimed the C main and Austin McCarl won the B. Schuchart was victorious in the Dash. Reutzel, Schuchart, Larson, Brown and Bayston were the high point getters (full points at the bottom).
Shane Golobic spun after contact, collecting Cale Thomas in the fourth heat. Both were o.k. Kerry Madsen flipped violently in turn two in the sixth heat. He returned for the B main with a backup car.
“I was nervous early,” said Larson in Victory Lane. “I didn’t get a good start. My car was laid left, and I couldn’t get grip. I think as the fuel burned off, I got really good. I got the top going on the restart, and everybody was worked the middle and the bottom. I was able to get the runs I needed and pass them at the right time. I was trying to track Logan down, and hit the bottom of one and two and got a run on him. I felt like I needed to take advantage of that before we got to heavier traffic. I slid him and felt some contact. I was glad to see him not get into the wall or anything like that. It’s cool to get another win.”
“We were good,” said Schuchart. “We were going pretty good up top. I kind of got tight as the race went on. I just felt I wasn’t hitting my marks as well. It was just hard to roll the top. I was getting a little too upright there at the end of the race. I would have liked to have a little better of a race with Kyle. I wish the slide job was a little bit better. Maybe we’ll get him next time. It’s a good point night overall. We were good every time out. We’ll see how tomorrow goes.”
“I needed to try something different there,” said Reutzel. “I thought I could go to the bottom and at least maintain. I just did a really bad job going down there and running the bottom. I was just too slow. I had a really good racecar tonight, I just didn’t do a great job of driving. We’ll work on that tomorrow, and try to learn from my mistakes. Our car was good at the end. I had a good car, I just didn’t run a very good race. That was on me, and I’ll try to clean up my mistakes tomorrow.”
The “One and Only” continues Thursday, August 14. Saturday marks the $50,000 to win Brownell’s Capitani Classic presented by Great Southern Bank.
