Huset’s Speedway Re-open
Brandon, SD
All Stars
36 cars
Huset’s was busting at the seams in its re-open. From a live band to entertain long lines, to fireworks at the end, it was well done. The place has been kept up well in its three-year dormancy, and track staff did a great job getting things ready to go.
Kyle Larson (14th car out to time) set the standard in time trials at 10.843 seconds on the quarter-mile. The track was in great shape all night. Justin Henderson (27th car out) was second quick, followed by Lynton Jeffrey (4th), Cory Eliason (13th), Skylar Prochaska (3rd), Paige Polyak (18th), Rico Abreu (21st), Brian Brown (1st), Paul McMahan (26th) and Gio Scelzi (31st). Cars timed in their heat groups, and Jeffrey, Larson, Henderson and Scelzi were quickest in their respective groups. The fourth group had issues as Brooke Tatnell and Austin McCarl pulled in right away in hot laps and scratched for the night. Baughman also did not get a time in the group, but changed a motor and rear-end to start the heat.
Heat one (started): 1. Aaron Reutzel 87 (1) 2. Brown 21 (2) 3. Trey Starks 44s (5) 4. Prochaska 35 (3) 5. Tucker Klaasmeyer 27 (6) / 6. Skylar Gee 99 (8) 7. Gerard McIntyre Jr. 07 (7) 8. Colin Smith o5 (9) 9. Jeffrey 83 (4)
In order to throw one last flag at Huset’s, Doug Clark flagged this one before giving it up for son Justin to handle. Doug got a big ovation. 10-lap heats took the top five to the feature. Heat winners, and the fastest remaining qualifiers who finished in a transfer spot made the Dash. Reutzel led early over Brown and Starks. McIntyre surged into fifth on lap two, but Jeffrey contacted him in a racing incident, knocking out the fast qualifier (for the group) with a broken front end. Klaasmeyer was able to take the final transfer from McIntyre on lap four. With Jeffrey out, Prochaska dashed.
Heat two (started): 1. Dominic Scelzi 41s (1) 2. Ian Madsen 5 (6) 3. Polyak 19 (2) 4. Eliason 26 (3) 5. Tim Kaeding 3 (7) / 6. Hunter Schuerenberg 55 (5) 7. Elliot Amdahl 51A (8) 8. Larson 57 (4) 9. Brandt O’Banion 47 (9)
D. Scelzi led early over Polyak, and I. Madsen up from sixth. Larson was running fourth, when all hell broke loose. He hit the front stretch wall, and went to the work area to replace his right rear. D. Scelzi led Polyak, I. Madsen, and Eliason and Kaeding, who had been battling for the last transfer spot, back to green. Larson moved up to seventh before O’Banion contacted the turn one wall and retired. Disaster befell Larson when he got into the turn one wall and flipped violently. He was ok, but done for the night. So was his chance for an eighth straight All Star win and a $57,000 weekend. Schuerenberg took the final transfer from Kaeding in a good battle on lap five, while Madsen took second from Polyak on lap six. Kaeding battled back and nipped Schuerenberg at the line by less than a tenth of a second for the final transfer.
Heat three (started): 1. Cale Thomas 70 (1) 2. McMahan 13 (2) 3. Abreu 24 (3) 4. Zeb Wise 11 (6) 5. Shane Golobic 17w (5) / 6. Henderson 7 (4) 7. Greg Wilson w20 (7) 8. Cody Hansen 4 (9) 9. Donovan Peterson 11xs (8)
Peterson flipped down the backstretch at the outset. He walked away but was done for the night. Thomas pulled away at the outset and never looked back. Henderson became the third quick heat qualifier to not make the Dash, when Golobic passed him for fifth on lap three.
Heat four (started): 1. Kerry Madsen 2m (3) 2. Terry McCarl 4x (2) 3. G. Scelzi 18 (4) 4. Jody Rosenboom 14 (1) 5. Josh Baughman 17 (7) / 6. Matt Juhl 09 (5) 7. Chuck McGillivray 101 (6) DNS – Austin McCarl 17A, Brooke Tatnell 16
T. McCarl led early over Rosenboom and K. Madsen. Baughman went from seventh to the final transfer on lap one. K. Madsen shot around Rosenboom to take second on lap three, and Gio followed a lap later. K. Madsen tracked T. McCarl down and passed him for the lead on lap nine to take a Dash spot. Gio was also dashing.
Dash one (started): 1. K. Madsen (1) 2 D. Scelzi (2) 3. Abreu (3) 4. Reutzel (4) 5. Brown (5)
The 4-lap Dash decided the inside of the first five rows of the fatuer. K. Madsen led D. Scelzi and Abreu early. D. Scelzi made a couple of dives at Madsen, who was doing a good job of staying wide up front and earning the pole.
Dash two (started): 1. Eliason (1) 2. Thomas (4) 3. G. Scelzi (3) 4. Prochaska (2) 5. Polyak (5)
Eliason led early, and Thomas jumped up to second from row two.
