Jason Johnson (1st car out to time) set the standard in time trials with a lap of 15.644 seconds, the quickest lap this year to date.  John Sernett (16th car out) was second quick, followed by Troy Little (6th), Brian Brown (36th), Ryan Anderson (9th), Terry McCarl (40th), Brent Antill (4th), Roger Crockett (2nd), Tim Kaeding (7th) and Max Dumesny (27th).  Mark Hurd tagged the wall on his first lap and did not get a time in.  Jaymie Moyle took a qualifying lap in John VanDenBerg's v10 when the Stroud 1s could not make the call.  Clyde Nagel piloted the v10 the rest of the night.  Jesse Giannetto was only able to get one lap in.  Tyler Houseman and Greg Jones suffered motor problems.

Heat one (started): 1. Kaeding 83JR (4) 2. Clint Garner 40 (1) 3. Ja. Johnson 50D (6) 4. Calvin Landis 70 (3) 5. Zach Chappell 97 (2) / 6. Dennis Moore Jr. 0 (7) 7. Wayne Johnson 14AJ (9) 8. Ry. Anderson 71R (5) 9. Jason Solwold R19 (10) 10. Mike Moore 69 (8) 11. Jeff Johnson 11J (11) DNS - Jones 35

Kaeding overtook Garner who led early on lap two.  He checked out from there.  The stacked heat was a wild one, with Moore Jr., W. Johnson and Solwold all missing the invert and transfer spots.  Moore Jr. and W. Johnson put on an entertaining battle, but both headed for the B.  Chappell will pilot a team car to Aaron Berryhill at the Nationals.

Heat two (started): 1. Shane Stewart 4m (1) 2. Lynton Jeffrey 10 (2) 3. McCarl 24 (5) 4. Chris Walraven 56 (3) 5. Dumesny 83m (4) / 6. Travis Cram 92 (10) 7. Sernett 91 (6) 8. Larry Pinegar II 1A (9) 9. Mike Benson 77m (7) 10. Tyler Houseman 50 (11) 11. Brooke Tatnell 66 (8) DNS - Moyle v10 (1s)

Tatnell got over the cushion and flipped in turn two on the initial try at green.  After the race was restarted, Stewart decimated the field, shooting out immediately from his pole position.  McCarl used a last lap pass to snare third from Walraven.  Cram surged to sixth early, but couldn't find a way to gain on Mad Max.

Heat three (started): 1. Skip Jackson 2 (3) 2. Matt Moro 47 (2) 3. Ricky Logan 7x (1) 4. Billy Alley 22 (7) 5. Giannetto D1 (8) / 6. Antill 1 (5) 7. John Lambertz 12 (9) 8. Little 20AU (6) 9. Stephen Allard 18 (4) 10. Hurd 44m (11) 11. Marty Perovich 17AU (10) DNS - Jerrol Slinkard 15s

Jackson shot by front row starters, Moro and Logan, while the two almost took each other out on the initial circuit and Skip never looked back.  Alley and Giannetto missed the invert, but made up for it with nice drives using the tacky low side of turns one and two to get by Little, Antill and Allard, who smacked the wall while running sixth on the white flag lap.

Heat four (started): 1. Kerry Madsen 55 (1) 2. Kevin Frey 2K (2) 3. Brown 21B (6) 4. Tim St. Arnold 8s (4) 5. Jeff Mitrisin 17G (8) / 6. Cameron Dodson 37 (3) 7. Crockett 11 (5) 8. Chad Meyer 1w (9) 9. Colin Northway 60 (7) 10. Eric Vanderploeg 7a (10) 11. Robert Bell 71 (11)

Madsen led flag to flag in impressive fashion.  Brown was fast in his initial 410 start in the Doogs 21B, powered by a Kistler.  Mitrisin made up for a disappointing qualifying effort by tracking down an impressive Dodson and finally getting by him in the last corner for the final transfer.

C main (started): 1. Meyer (2) 2. Solwold (3) 3. Lambertz (1) / 4. Cram (4) 5. Je. Johnson (7) 6. Houseman (6) 7. Jones (8) 8. Nagel (9) 9. Perovich (5) DNS - Vanderploeg, Bell, Hurd, Slinkard

Meyer grabbed the early lead from fellow South Dakotan, Lambertz.  Nagel spun on lap two bringing out the caution.  The restart saw Meyer leading Lambertz and Solwold back to the green flag.  Solwold got by Lambertz on the restart to claim what appeared to be the last transfer.  When Allard was unable to start the B main, Lambertz was in action as the first alternate.

B main (started): 1. Antill (4) 2. Sernett (1) 3. W. Johnson (13) 4. Tatnell (10) / 5. Solwold (14) 6. Little (2) 7. Pinegar (8) 8. Meyer (15) 9. Ry. Anderson (3) 10. Crockett (5) 11. Lambertz (16) 12. Benson (9) 13. M. Moore (11) 14. Dodson (7) 15. D. Moore (6) 16. Northway (8) DNS - Allard

While Sernett led early, Tatnell and W. Johnson were busting forward from the rear of the field.  By lap nine of twelve, W. Johnson and Solwold were slicing and dicing for the final transfer.  A pass of Sernett by Antill was negated by a Dodson spin.  The restart saw Sernett leading Antill, Tatnell, W. Johnson and Ry. Anderson.  Antill made his winning move shortly after the green flag fell, as did W. Johnson, who cruised by Tatnell on the low side in the last corner.  A late charge by Solwold was all for naught as he came just short of getting by Tatnell for the final transfer.  A blanket could have been thrown over third through fifth.  Northway and D. Moore, who had replaced a flat tire under caution exited early.

A main (started): 1. Kaeding (3) 2. McCarl (4) 3. Stewart (15) 4. Alley (18) 5. Landis (7) 6. Garner (14) 7. St. Arnold (1) 8. Madsen (17) 9. Tatnell (24) 10. Giannetto (23) 11. W. Johnson (21) 12. Brown (5) 13. Chappell (10) 14. Jeffrey (11) 15. Ja. Johnson (6) 16. Mitrisin (20) 17. Walraven (8) 18. Logan (16) 19. Dumesny (2) 20. Sernett (22) 21. Antill (19) 22. Frey (13) 23. Jackson (9) 24. Moro (12)

Giannetto started at the rear after changing a tire.  Kaeding slipped under the first row to lead the first three laps before an Antill spin.  The restart saw Kaeding leading McCarl, Dumesny, Brown, who had a pass for third negated by caution and St. Arnold.  McCarl bumped by Kaeding on the restart, but it was brought back when Jackson flipped in turn three.  He was uninjured.  The next time the green flag fell, Brown shot under Dumesny and McCarl to gain second.  He stalked Kaeding for the next thirteen laps and once or twice got his nose under the Californian.  When Dumesny got into the wall in front of the leaders, Kaeding hit the binders with Brown running into him.  The impact shoved a nerf bar into the tire, and forcing Brown to go pitside for repairs.  What looked to be a sure win turned into a charge back for 12th in the final four laps of the 20 lapper.  Seven cars moved up at least eight positions, making for an entertaining feature that saw two groove racing at its best.  Kaeding's victory was his second career Knoxville tally and second on Casey's night.

360s

The participants were those invited to the Tournament of Champions on Sunday, and those qualified for Friday night's make-up of the 360 Nationals (C, B and A mains).

Heat one (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Frankie Heimbaugh 04 (2*) 2. Dave Glennon 5 (1*) 3. Stacey Alexander 126 (4*) 4. Kramer Williamson 73 (6) 5. Kevin Welsh 18w (7) 6. Dave Hall 51 (10) 7. Brett Mather 54 (5) 8. Dave Becker 7B (3) 9. Matt Sutton 3 (8) 10. Josh Schneiderman 49 (9) 11. Matt Harms 53H (11)

Heimbaugh grabbed the early lead from Glennon and was never challenged.  Welsh made a last lap pass of Hall for fifth, but was smoking after the checkered fell and would not return.

Heat two (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Dave Hesmer 1 (5*) 2. Joe Beaver 53 (3*) 3. Darren Stewart 91x (10*) 4. Troy Meyer 11m (7) 5. Bronson Maeschen 96 (6) 6. Bobby Mincer 15 (4) 7. Nick Mulheim 38m (11) 8. Warren Mahoney 25 (2) 9. Ryan Voss 2H (8) 10. Jerry Brey 17J (9) DNS - Mark Broughman 52 (1)

Beaver grabbed the lead and used the low side to keep it until a lap six pass by Hesmer.  Both benefited from the absence of Broughman, who was to start on the pole.  Stewart was fun to watch, and had moved up to third by the halfway point.

Heat three (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Tony Bruce Jr. 18 (1*) 2. Cody Branchcomb 94 (2*) 3. Darren Long 7 (4*) 4. Garry Lee Maier 11x (5) 5. Mitchell Alexander 6 (3) 6. Cody Geldart 6G (7) 7. Ryan York 5R (9) 8. Johnny Anderson 7a (8) 9. Rager Phillips 9 (11) 10. Tony Crank 9c (6) 11. Justin Newberry 36 (10)

Branchcomb and Bruce exchanged the early advantage twice before Bruce took command for good on lap two.  Maier worked over Long most of the way to no avail and settled for fourth.

Heat four (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Dain Naida 54N (2*) 2. Sean McClelland 1x (1*) 3. Ray Allen Kilhanek 77 (3*) 4. John Kearney 83 (5) 5. Stevie Walsh 20 (4) 6. Manny Rockhold 50 (7) 7. Chris Roseland 84 (8) 8. Ryan Jamison 51J (9) 9. Larry Ball Jr. 5J (10) 10. Steve Leiber 62B (6) 11. Travis Rilat 29 (11)

McClelland shot out to an early lead.  Rilat exited with a blown powerplant on lap two.  Naida ran down McClelland on lap six and the two exchanged the lead in a great battle before Naida took it for good on the white flag circuit.  Kilhanek, piloting Terry Alexander's 77, earned a spot in the A with a last corner pass of Kearney in another great battle for position.

Heat five (started, *qualified for feature): 1. Josh Higday 10 (1*) 2. John Schulz 2s (3*) 3. Terry Hinck 21H (8*) 4. Roger Rager 6R (9) 5. Natalie Sather 94s (2) 6. Preston Peebles II 11P (4) 7. Seth Brahmer 13 (6) 8. Bobby Hawks 5H (5) 9. Eric Mason B29 (10) 10. Glenn Styres 0 (7) 11. Dustin Daggett 85 (11)

Higday and Schulz checked out on the rest of the field.  Rager put on a nice charge, but came just short of getting under Hinck for third.  Daggett had gone from the tail to fifth on the white flag lap before suffering electrical problems.

Heat six (started, *qualfied for feature): 1. Gary Wright 9x (1*) 2. Jake Peters 57x (2*) 3. Dusty Zomer 1z (4*) 4. Phil Dietz 72 (3) 5. Doug Wilson 86 (5) 6. Eric Jobe 23 (7) 7. Brett Golik 5G (8) 8. Rick Ideus 5B (9) 9. Donnie Steward 16s (10) 10. Brian Hetrick 35 (6)

Wright led start to finish in a mostly single-file affair.

B main one (started): 1. Meyer (2) 2. Mulheim (5) / 3. Mather (8) 4. Becker (7) 5. Mincer (6) 6. Williamson (1) 7. Sutton (9) 8. Schneiderman (11) 9. Brey (14) 10. Voss (12) 11. Hall (4) 12. Harms (13) 13. Broughman (15) 14. Mahoney (10) 15. Maeschen (3) DNS - Welsh

Maeschen took the early lead until a bonzai move by Meyer on the high side, resulted in Meyer going from third to first.  On the white flag lap, Maeschen was running second when he flipped.  He was uninjured.  Mather could not quite reel in an impressive Mulheim.

B main two (started): 1. Maier (1) 2. Kearney (2) / 3. Geldart (3) 4. Rockhold (6) 5. York (5) 6. Phillips (9) 7. Roseland (8) 8. Leiber (14) 9. Crank (11) 10. Newberry (13) 11. Jamison (7) 12. J. Anderson (10) 13. Walsh (4) 14. Ball (12) DNS - M. Alexander, Rilat

No one was going to catch the two front row starters, but there were plenty of stoppages.  Ball suffered a fuel pump problem on the opening lap.  Walsh and Phillips came to a rest on the track on laps two and three, respectively.  Jamison was running fourth when he exited under a caution on lap seven for debris.  Kearney passed Maier on lap two, but that was negated by the lap two caution.  Kearney followed his fellow Kansas native the rest of the way.

B main three (started): 1. Jobe (5) 2. Daggett (14) / 3. Ideus (9) 4. Rager (1) 5. Hawks (10) 6. Wilson (4) 7. Dietz (2) 8. Brahmer (8) 9. Peebles (6) 10. Styres (13) 11. Sather (3) 12. Steward (12) 13. Mason (11) 14. Golik (7) DNS - Hetrick

Mason spun, collecting Styres on the initial try at green.  On the restart, Jobe took the lead from his third row starting spot and led the distance.  Daggett was again the one to watch, as he used restarts on lap five for Steward who stopped after losing a driveline, and lap ten when Peebles spun.  Ideus came hard late and was gaining on Daggett, but ran out of time.

A main (started): 1. Hesmer (5) 2. Wright (6) 3. Peters (12) 4. Maier (18) 5. Beaver (11) 6. Bruce (1) 7. Schulz (9) 8. Higday (7) 9. Kearney (23) 10. Zomer (17) 11. Mulheim (20) 12. S. Alexander (15) 13. Long (14) 14. Jobe (21) 15. McClelland (13) 16. Hinck (2) 17. Meyer (19) 18. Daggett (22) 19. Glennon (8) 20. Naida (3) 21. Branchcomb (10) 22. Stewart (4) 23. Kilhanek (17) DNS - Heimbaugh

Bruce took the early lead before succombing to Stewart on lap two.  Hesmer was roaring and was about to pass Stewart, when Stewart got sideways and tipped over on lap seven.  He was done for the night.  Hesmer assumed the lead on the restart ahead of Bruce, Wright, Peters and Higday. One lap later, Branchcomb hooked another car's wheel and went into a series of wicked flips into turn one.  He was uninjured, but done.  The racing was great as Wright and Peters battled along with Maier and Bruce, who ran a strong race.  Maier charge from 18th to fourth was entertaining as was Kearney's run from 23rd to ninth.  Hesmer pulled away on each restart, with Wright only making one serious slide-job attempt.
