Dusty Zomer
Knoxville, IA, July 18, 2015 – There was plenty to talk about after a pair of thrilling feature finishes Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway! It was Twin Features Night for the 410 sprint cars, and the action kept coming! In the first non-stop 20-lap feature, California’s Tim Kaeding made a last lap pass to win. Unfortunately, a failed postrace technical inspection handed the win to Brian Brown. In the second, Dusty Zomer claimed his tenth career feature win at Knoxville with a late pass of his own! Billy Alley made it two for two, winning in his second appearance this year at Knoxville in the 360 class. It was his 13th career feature win in a 360.
In the first 410 feature event, Danny Lasoski jumped to the lead, while pole-sitter, Justin Henderson got over the inside berm and threw his front wheels skyward. Brown trailed Lasoski, while Henderson brought things under control in third.
Brown pounced on Lasoski immediately as the two battled at the front. Brown took the spot on lap three. Meanwhile, a battle was being waged for third. Kaeding and Henderson exchanged the spot four times in five laps. Behind them, Ian Madsen and Terry McCarl were battling for fifth, trading that spot at least five times.
The non-stop event got interesting in lapped traffic. Kaeding shot into third in the last five laps. On lap 19, he used the low side to shoot by Lasoski for second. As Brown took the white flag and then slid across the track in turn one, Kaeding stuck his mount to the bottom of the track and shot by for the lead and crossed first at the checkers. He would later be disqualified during technical inspection for a muffler issue. Brown would inherit his 30th career win here, ahead of Lasoski, Henderson, McCarl and Madsen. Dusty Zomer, Bill Balog, Davey Heskin, Tasker Phillips and hard-charger Craig Dollansky rounded out the top ten.
Sixteen cars finished on the lead lap of the first feature, meaning the leaders started in row eight for the second. Pole-sitter Dustin Selvage led the field ahead of Logan Forler and Lynton Jeffrey. Brown stopped with steering issues with a lap in the books. The restart saw Selvage leading Forler, Jeffrey, Dakota Hendrickson and Phillips. Hendrickson and Forler battled back and forth for the second spot, while Selvage pulled away.
Zomer made his way up to fourth by the time Brown brought out his second caution of the race five laps in. Hendrickson shot up to second, while Zomer disposed of Forler for the third spot. On lap 11, Zomer used the cushion to rocket by Hendrickson into second, and a lap later, he claimed the lead on the low side. He would cruise to victory. Heskin was in the top three by lap 13, and would gain second in the late stages. His late charge came up short.
Behind Zomer and Heskin was Lasoski, who gained fourth on lap 16, and the third spot on the last lap. Dollansky made a last lap pass to gain fourth ahead of Selvage. Kaeding, who was later disqualified, finished in the sixth spot, ahead of Hendrickson, Henderson, Forler, McCarl and Phillips. Henderson earned quick time in qualifying, while McCarl, Lasoski and Hendrickson won heat races. Selvage won the B main.
“You always want to get to the front as fast as possible,” said Zomer in Victory Lane. “I made a few mistakes getting through there. I knew those guys were coming, you knew with the invert they would keep coming. It feels really good to turn right into Victory Lane. It’s been a while since we won here. I’m super happy for the team. We’ve been so close lately, and it’s great to get a win!”
Billy Alley shot out from the pole in the 18-lap 360 feature, leading every lap. The Bennet, Nebraska driver was strong on the low side. Behind him, Justin Henderson was on the move from his starting position outside row three. By lap two, he was by Ian Madsen for fourth, and disposed of Calvin Landis for the third spot on lap five. A lap later, he shot by Dakota Hendrickson to claim the second position.
Meanwhile, up front, Alley was dicing through lapped traffic and increasing his lead on the field. On the white flag lap, Tony Shilling got into the turn one wall, bringing out the caution. Alley led Henderson, Madsen, Hendrickson and Clint Garner back to green. The victory seemed to be in Alley’s grasp as he headed into turn three on the final lap. That’s when Cody Ledger came to a stop in turn four.
The last restart was just like the other, and Alley pulled away in open air to claim his 13th career 360 feature win at Knoxville. Henderson was second, ahead of Madsen, Garner and Hendrickson. Nate Van Haaften, Jamie Ball, Joe Beaver, Jon Agan and Landis rounded out the top ten. Henderson posted quick time over the field, while Sawyer Phillips, Agan and Garner won heat races.
“I was to thank the guy who owns this racecar Joe Steinbach,” said Alley in Victory Lane. “We’ve been finishing second to Jack Dover a lot over in Nebraska, and we had a race won at I-80 (Speedway) the other night. I gave it away and spun out by myself. My car owner came and didn’t say one negative thing. He just gives me a great racecar. I just want to say thank you to he and his family. I’m thankful to be here. This is a diamond on dirt…a special place.”
