(Bill W) October 18, 2016 – Though it wasn’t originally on the calendar for the Matt Wood Racing #17w team and driver Kerry Madsen, last weekend’s trip to central Pennsylvania paid dividends. The team and Madsen continued to develop their chemistry in trips to the Williams Grove Open near Mechanicsburg Friday and Port Royal Speedway Saturday with the World of Outlaws. They will tackle the WoO again this weekend on Friday at Lakeside Speedway near Kansas City, Kansas and Saturday at the Salina Highbanks Speedway in Oklahoma.
With 48 cars assembled at Williams Grove, Kerry timed in seventh quick in his group. He was sixth quick at Port Royal with 46 cars assembled. “The car was good,” he says. “There were a couple of times, particularly in the heat races where I let us down a little bit. The restarts at Williams Grove…I lost some spots on each of those. I feel if I would have done better, our results could have been better. But I was really happy with the car’s performance.”
A 17th place finish in the Williams Grove Open on Friday was followed by a hard-charging performance at Port Saturday from 23rd to 14th. “It’s always fun to come from the back like that when you have a good racecar,” says Kerry of his run at Port Royal. “We were able to get the hard-charger and have some fun. I think our run there at Port was a really good effort.”
Taking on the WoO and the Pennsylvania Posse is never easy. “We knew it was going to be tough going when we decided to head out there,” says Kerry. “It was a good step for us to go out there and get some baselines to work with. There were a lot of bright spots and some potential moving forward that we got from it.”
Overall, Kerry was confident about the weekend. “We would have liked some better results, but I was pretty happy with the weekend to be honest,” he says. “We weren’t able to put a whole night together, but I was happy with the progress. There were times when we had really good race cars.”
Lakeside and Salina await the team this weekend. “We’re definitely looking to get a little further up the finishing board,” says Kerry. “I think we found a direction we need to go, so hopefully, that will translate into some good results this weekend. I really enjoy racing with the guys on this team.”
