Jac Haudenschild (10th car out to time) set quick time at 15.879 seconds. Brooke Tatnell (24th car out) was second quick, followed by Craig Dollansky (9th), Jesse Hockett (6th), Steve Kinser (48th), Danny Lasoski (17th), Don Droud Jr. (2nd), Kraig Kinser (3rd), Chad Kemenah (40th) and Justin Henderson (7th). Randy Hannagan suffered mechanical ills and struggled in one lap on the clock. Tyler Houseman was unable to get a time in. Only the top 48 were eligible for the heats, the rest went to the D main. The track was racy all night, but dried out and got wider as the night went on. All in all a great track for racing.
D main (started): 1. Hannagan 1x (10) 2. Michael Jones 1a (2) / 3. Peter Murphy 35 (1) 4. Chris Walraven 56 (7) 5. Barry Ruble 63 (4) 6. Greg Jones 35x (9) 7. Robert Bell 71 (8) 8. Jaymie Moyle 5m (6) 9. Larry Neighbors F5 (3) 10. Jerrel Slinkard 15s (5) DNS - Brent Antill 1B, Tyler Houseman 50
M. Jones led the 8 lapper until the sixth circuit, when a strong running Hannagan took the lead from him. Slinkard exited on lap four, Neighbors on lap six, and Moyle on lap seven. M. Jones held on to the final transfer to the C main over Murphy.
Heat one (started): 1. Matt Moro 47 (2) 2. Kemenah 15K (4) 3. K. Kinser (5) 4. Haudenschild 22 (6) 5. Paul McMahan 11H (7) / 6. Shane Stewart 26 (12) 7. Tim Shaffer 6 (8) 8. Ricky Logan 10 (9) 9. Billy Alley 22A (3) 10. Mike Reinke 02 (1) 11. Ryan Anderson 71R (11) 12. Kaley Gharst 44G (10)
Moro led flag to flag. Alley was running third on the second lap when he came to a stop in turn two. He restarted at the tail. The restart saw Moro leading Reinke, Kemenah, K. Kinser and Haudenschild. Kemenah used mostly the low groove to move into second, but never seriously challenged a strong running Moro. A fine run by Stewart ended up one spot short of a transfer.
Heat two (started): 1. Wayne Johnson 14AJ (3) 2. Tatnell 8 (6) 3. Terry McCarl 24 (2) 4. Jason Solwold R19 (11) 5. Kevin Swindell 1 (1) / 6. Clint Garner 40 (8) 7. Henderson D11 (4) 8. Stevie Smith 19 (10) 9. Droud 17G (5) 10. Jon Agan 4 (7) 11. Jeremy Campbell 10c (9) DNS - Colin Northway 60
Johnson took the low line around front row starters, K. Swindell and McCarl and never looked back. Tatnell looked particularly strong, battling with McCarl for the runner-up position. Solwold started scratch and outdueled South Dakota natives Henderson and Garner for a transfer spot after a lap eight restart for Agan, who came to a stop.
Heat three (started): 1. Sammy Swindell 5 (2) 2. Tim Kaeding 83 (1) 3. Lasoski 20 (5) 4. Dollansky 7 (6) 5. Brian Paulus 28 (4) / 6. Daryn Pittman 21 (3) 7. Jason Sides 7s (10) 8. Tim St. Arnold 7w (9) 9. Chad Meyer 1w (8) 10. Ryan Coniam 46 (7) 11. Eric Vanderploeg 7x (11) DNS - Lynton Jeffrey 4AU
S. Swindell led Kaeding flag to flag. Lasoski found the low groove to his liking in battling Pittman, Paulus and Dollansky and moving into the show position.
Heat four (started): 1. Calvin Landis 70 (2) 2. Jason Meyers 14 (8) 3. S. Kinser 11 (5) 4. Brian Brown 21B (1) 5. Kerry Madsen 55 (3) / 6. Hockett 9 (6) 7. Donny Schatz 15 (11) 8. Brandon Wimmer 7TW (10) 9. Joey Saldana 2 (7) 10. Skip Jackson 2AU (9) 11. Jesse Giannetto D1 (4) 12. Mike Moore 69 (12)
Landis took the lap one lead from Brown. Brown came back to the point, but the pass was negated when Giannetto, running fifth, spun and restarted at the tail. Landis cruised the rest of the way in a mostly single-file event. Meyers was into third by lap two from his row four starting spot after a questionable start for the entire field.
C main (started): 1. Smith (3) 2. Stewart (9) / 3. Jackson (1) 4. Sides (4) 5. Wimmer (5) 6. Hannagan (13) 7. Vanderploeg (11) 8. Moore (10) 9. Gharst (2) 10. M. Jones (12) 11. Anderson (6) 12. St. Arnold (7) 13. Schatz (8) DNS - Northway
A more star-studded C main you won't find this side of Nationals. Schatz exited on lap two in anticipation of a feature provisional. Jackson took the early advantage and looke to be cruising in the ten lapper before St. Arnold stopped on lap seven. The restart saw Jackson leading Smith, Sides, Wimmer and Stewart. Stewart took full advantage of the restart and captured the final transfer in the last three laps. Smith took the lead from Jackson on lap eight and Stewart followed suit in a nice run.
Dash one (started): 1. Haudenschild (1) 2. Lasoski (3) 3. Madsen (5) 4. Kemenah (4) 5. Dollansky (2) 6. Moro (6)
Haudenschild led throughout. Madsen turned it on the final two laps. In a slingshot move he took to the cushion and passed both Dollansky and Kemenah to come home third.
Dash two (started): 1. Tatnell (1) 2. S. Kinser (2) 3. Paulus (4) 4. K. Kinser (3) 5. Johnson (5) 6. McCarl (6)
Tatnell and S. Kinser's duel for the win was almost as entertaining as the one Johnson and McCarl were putting on for fifth. The computers say Johnson beat McCarl to the line, but that's the only way we knew for sure.
B main (started): 1. Alley (6) 2. Droud (2) 3. Hockett (1) 4. Pittman (5) / 5. Stewart (16) 6. Saldana (10) 7. Giannetto (4) 8. Shaffer (11) 9. Henderson (3) 10. Coniam (9) 11. Logan (14) 12. Garner (12) 13. Reinke (7) 14. Campbell (15) 15. Agan (8) 16. Meyer (13) 17. Smith (17) DNS - Jeffrey
Droud led most of the way, but a strong running Alley, back in the family car, took the point on lap 10 of 12. Stewart and Pittman went at it for the final transfer and traded the spot a couple of times. A magnificent drive by Stewart came up one spot short. The WoO used their allotment of provisionals for the night and there still weren't enough for Stewart, Shaffer, Sides, Wimmer, etc.
A main (started): 1. Lasoski (3) 2. S. Kinser (4) 3. K. Kinser (8) 4. McCarl (12) 5. Haudenschild (1) 6. Kaeding (20) 7. Johnson (10) 8. Dollansky (9) 9. Pittman (15) 10. Kemenah (7) 11. Madsen (5) 12. Schatz (25, pr.) 13. Moro (11) 14. Droud (14) 15. Meyers (23) 16. Brown (19) 17. Alley (16) 18. S. Swindell (17) 19. McMahan (22) 20. Paulus (6) 21. Meyer (28, pr.) 22. Saldana (27, pr.) 23. Tatnell (2) 24. K. Swindell (21) 25. Hockett (13) 26. Solwold (24) 27. Landis (18) 28. Jackson (26, pr.)
WoO provisionals Schatz and Saldana were joined by track provisionals, Jackson and Meyer. Tatnell seized control of the 20 lapper. S. Swindell contacted the turn two berm and spun on lap four. The restart saw Tatnell leading S. Kinser, Lasoski, Haudenschild and K. Kinser. The next seven laps saw a good battle for the runner-up position, with Lasoski seizing it from S. Kinser before a lap 11 spin by Meyer. With nine laps remaining, it took seven of them for Tatnell to hit lapped traffic. He slid by Landis fine, but clipped Hockett on the way by. The result of the contact saw the leader spin towards the turn two wall, thwarting his shot at his first Knoxville win on the white flag lap. Lasoski led the green, white, and checkered laps for his 85th Knoxville tally. Kaeding continued his hot hand at Knoxville, cruising from 20th to sixth. McCarl turned some bad luck around by coming home fourth and locking himself into Saturday's feature.
